While I agree that IDPA is not proper defensive training I do feel it is a defensive training AID.

In IDPA I shoot with my XD9 service which is also my carry gun and I use my XD9 tactical in USPSA and 3 gun.

Shot my first round of IDPA. I was pretty nervous and asked a lot of questions. Everyone there was pretty cool and helped me out and coached me on what I did wrong. All in all it was a great experience. I was competing in the 1911 class with my XD .45 which was good for it gave me practice on reloading. Some of the lessons learned is I need to keep myself from getting tunnel vision and I need to work on relaxing. I will definately try to make the next match.

Don't worry. That'll come once the basic rules are instinctive, and you have developed muscle memory on drawing, reloading, shooting around barricades, etc. It just gets more and more fun from here...

IDPA is not defensive training but it teaches you swift, flawless gun handling and in a short time, you will better know what you can and can't do with your gun.

Just because someone has been to and graduated from Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or wherever, that does not mean they are trained, it means you have been given some good instruction. What you do with it is up to you as an individual.

I hardly think 2-5 days of drawing and firing at a static target at 5,7 or 10 yards, a round on a simulator and a mag of simunitions is rounded and realistic defensive training, either. If you don't practice what you have been taught on a weekly basis, your skills will parish and when the elephant comes... so might you. Most of the people I know who train with well known instructors don't even practice 6 times a year, some of whom lives 2-20 minutes from a range. This is where IDPA and other leagues can help you.

IDPA/IPSC/3-Gun is an outlet for sharpening shooting and gun handling skills, it further promotes the shooting sports and strengthens the bonds on our 2nd amendment rights. Those that bash it either haven't tried it, didn't do well when they did, or they just like to run their mouths about a subject of which they know nothing (gun stores and some instructors)... but mostly they are damaging the shooting sports and, consequently, the 2nd Amendment.

A good combination of formal training, disciplined practice and competition produces a very capable shooter.

Achilles, Leonidas, Musashi, George Patton, Carlos Hathcock, Bull Simons... all great competitors... all great warriors.

You don't want to shoot up your carry gun? WTF man, the reason you carry a gun is because if you're going to use it, you better know how to use it well.

Think of it this way, if you were a pro basketball player, would you practice tennis all day long?

Shoot what you carry, if you can't afford the extra $4 for ammo, you need to take a long hard look at your budget. I can't say it enough to both newbies and veterans, SHOOT WHAT YOU CARRY, that's the point to IDPA.
Most guys at IDPA will shoot aluminum cased Blazer ammo because it's cheaper. I shoot a .45 and will sometimes shoot Wolf to save a few dollars.

If you want to compete IDPA with a 9mm, you better sell your .45 and start to carry a 9mm. Afterall, what does IDPA stand for...DEFENSIVE PISTOL, i.e. what you CARRY dude.
I used to shoot what I carry but I shoot a fair amount with my competion guns and after small parts start to break on my duty weapon after 15k rounds I decided to get some dedicated competition guns and I am happy with that. My duty gun is a 1911 and so are my race guns. The muscle memory is the same.

Shot my second round of IDPA last week. I did really well, finished first in my class and took 11th overall. I had a blast. I mainly focused on great shot placement and only walked away with two or three errors. I remember walking away from two of the rounds and thinking to myself, man that was fast. I'm sure it took forever compared to pro standards but it seemed like I was done in one second. I already can't wait for next months match.
