I compete with an STI edge in 40 sw for USPSA in limited class. I compete in IDPA with a STI trojan in 9mm.

Edge.

I have shot USPSA exactly twice, IDPA much more. Both are tremendous fun.
I use a XD 45 Tactical for both sports (and a few other guns, CZ 85, Browning Hipower, 9mm Para 1911 for IDPA). I like that I can either use it in Production with ~140 PF handloads or Limited-10 with (barely) major PF loads.

BB,

I use an XD9 Tactical in USPSA Production class and in IDPA Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) division. An insane amount of fun.

If you have never shot practical pistol competitions before, you might consider starting in IDPA. The reason is that IDPA courses of fire (CoF) tend to be less-complicated and easier to shoot. They have rules on how many scored shots are allowed, how far targets can be set, as well as how much movement can take place. In USPSA, these limitations don't exist, so CoFs can be MUCH harder (so hard I've seen people not come back after one USPSA match due to frustration).

I'm not saying that you shouldn't jump right in to USPSA, just that starting in IDPA provides an easier transition.

There can be a big rivalry between IDPA and USPSA shooters. Some IDPAers call USPSA shooters "gamers" and that the sport is nothing but run and gun, and an equipment race. Some USPSAers call IDPA shootes "mall ninjas" or "wannabe Rambos" and claim that the sport has rules that are arbitrary. But if you are interested in the sport, and you take the time to understand WHY the rules and equipment are what they are, each sport makes sense.

But the simple fact is that they are both lots of fun, and great ways to get better with your gun.

Good luck with your decision.

Jim
