What was the person behind the shooter holding up in the air on his palm?

its a timer.

when the buzzer sounds you draw and fire threw the course. everytime the gun gos off it records the lap time. when your done it uses the last shot fired as your stage time

Its a shot timer...
It produces an audible beep that serves as your start signal and it uses a microphone to record every shot fired and keeps track of the time down to a hundredth of a second. After your done shooting, it will give the time it took you to shoot the stage, from thr start signal to the last shot fired.

im out of the airforce in about 2 months. dont have any time off till then and then my fun budget is going to the oregon state idpa match

Aiformula and I made a trip to the range tonight. I loaded up some .44 rounds and wanted to chrono them again since I bumped the charge slightly. I also brought my STI Spartan for him to try, my 10-22, and my HD shotty so I could zero it with slugs. I also brought along my cocky 15 1/2 year old step-son. i tease him but hes a great kid. Here are some pics and vids. We had a great time and Tony brought some fun toys too. His M14 even went full auto on me (slam fired once, I think).

And for anyone wondering why he was taking video of us shooting his Ruger, look at the chrono then go look up some factory load chrono numbers. pushing 1400 fps w/ I believe he said 200gr bullets is a thump. I swear I heard the air sizzling after those things went down range.
