An old saying, "It's not the arrow, its the indian." Full house race guns are used mostly because they are made to be dang durable and digest lots of rounds. If you can master shooting at B level or above in any of the Practical shooting sports, you will be light years above anyone you might meet in a self defense situtation.

MOZU MOKU - Do not be deluded

Shoot whatever you want, but don't think that if the folks shooting the Wiz bang gun picked up a bone stock self defense gun, they wouldn't be able to "rock-n-roll" with them. They can. And most of them can pick up ANY gun and adapt to it in a matter of seconds. The best shooters in the world shoot many types of guns and the idea of just picking one and only shooting it is just limiting your experience and ability to adapt.

The thing about shooting, is once you don't have to think about the shooting, your mind is free to sovle "other" problems that may arise.

I'll guarrantee that you shooting those "race" guns isn't as easy as the good shooters make it look. I do shoot fancy race guns and stock guns, and my times are only slightly better with the tricked out guns. I choose shoot them because I can, and at the level I want to perform, fractions of seconds are the difference between first and second.

I've seen many a shooter think that whiz bang guns will automatically make them much better, that just isn't the case.

What I meant to say was, if the only gun you use is a "race gun", and you don't have it with you when you need it, it won't do you any good. Obviously, anyone that shoots these guns well would also shoot a stock carry gun well. Looking back at my original post, I see that I wasn't as clear as I thought. Bottom line, either of these sports would make you a better shooter. As Massaad Ayoob is quoted as saying, "any practice is good practice, and better than no practice".

very true. handgun skills are perishable. if you dont shoot often you have to find away to keep yourself in condition to shoot. i use dry fire extensively.

Okay, after shooting my 4th match I have now concluded that the previously mentioned individual is simply a major PITA. The man argues his opinion about everything, talks during the briefing, talks when folks are in the start area, walks the course in front of people who are "on deck", picks up other people's brass while they check their scores, does nothing to help in the setup /cleanup / pasting / etc, ...

Every sport has 'em.

The best thing you can do is grin and bear it.

Or you could make up a bunch of really absurd excuses... Perhaps show him your new race gun, an 80 year old Russian revolver with a cardboard compensator duct taped to the end.

Fortunately, every sport has these too. I'm glad the few events I have shot (IDPA & Steel Challenge) were populated with people like this. I I felt welcome, My wife and I learned a lot, and we'll be back time and time again. We'll probably branch out and see you at one of the matches within the next 3 or 4 weeks.

Our SWAT guys on at our local PD shoot USPSA. Not all of them, but about half. It all makes them better shooters.

Going through a COF, with a revo, open gun, Limited gun, it doesn't matter, it all makes you a better shooter and make those split second adjustments that need to be made easier to do. All of this is under stress as well.

I don't think anyone wants to be on the receiving end of someone who can do a bill drill at 10 yards, all A's, in 1.64 seconds.
