First competition (w/o any practice)
I just got the results from my first competition. It was a relaxed IDPA style shoot with 3 stages. I said in the title that I hadn't practiced because before match time I had never tried to reload quickly, I had never drawn from a holster with live ammo, never fired while moving (we had to fire 6 rounds while walking forwards in one stage). All in all, I think I did pretty well. I took 7th out of 20 on the 1st stage. I came in 17th of 20 on stage 2 where I encountered my first ever jam. I had to clear the last round of a mag before moving on because I only needed one shot on a pepper popper but I shoved the next mag in before racking the slide. When I did rack, I let go too soon and the slide caught the exiting round. I kind of paniced and it cost me about 5 seconds. My score was good there (tied for 6th in points) but I was way too slow. In the last round, I had a few misses which got me pretty good so I was 16th out of 19 on that stage.
Tomorrow I'm getting some snap caps so I can practice my reloading at home and hopefully make a better showing next time. Overall I shot pretty well, just not fast enough. Any great tips on how to practice the reloads? I figured I would load one snap in each mag, chamber one, then just act like I'm in the pepper popper situation again where I pull the trigger, rack to eject the last round, drop mag, slam the new mag, chamber one, repeat twice (I only have 3 mags). |

Congrats on your first match... as everyone told me, "focus on shot placement and safety... speed will come". Your reloading plan sounds like a good one. As Knight told me after I got a procedural for reloading... count your shots. Which ones go where and when you should have to reload so you'll know when. I don't know if it helps...
Are you addicted yet? Sheesh, I've been trying to go shooting for a week now and I'm hoping I can get some IDPA practice in tomorrow with a local club.

Congrats on your first match. One of these days I'll free up my weekends and get into the sport.

Hey, you didn't DQ so in my book you did great.
I've been trying to establish the best way for me to push the mag release button. Experiment with this and figure out the best way for you.
