USPSA Today

No DQ!

I got a chance to revisit the plate rack. I wasn't real fast, but I didn't miss. One stage had some 25 yard shots. I did better on this stage than I expected (at least for me!).

The weather was cold and damp. I had trouble with mags dropping. This has never happened before. Maybe got some dirt in the magwell as it still happened after I wiped them down. I did wipe them down with silicone the night before.

It was nice to get another event in after the last time. This will probably be the last one for awhile.

Keep the mags bone dry and clean.
The silicon may have picked up grit.

I've got synthetic greese in my factory 10-rounders because they can use all the help they can get. I've considered clipping a coil off of these bad boys to make um a little less stiff. I havn't had probs sticking in my mag-well though. My mags are all bone dry on the outside like BBunin. Dry and clean.

Thanks for the replies. I looked into it this afternoon. This is the first time I have done tactical reloads. It seems with rounds in the mag they stick just a little on the back of the block area. I think the cold weather contributed to the problem.

Avoid any oil/grease or other "liquid" lubricants. The materials and tolerances of the mag components are meant to really run dry, and grease/oil will definitely pick up dirt, sand, and any other grit tha may be around. The teflon sprays that go on dry typically add a substantial film to the components, often decreasing the tolerances around the follower. On thing you may want to try is the finely ground graphite powder you can get at a locksmith or home store. It is a phenomenal lubricant, dry, and very fine. It will in short time actuall embes itself in to the follower and the followers will slide as if they were on ball bearings. I have been a extremely active USPSA shooter for ten years and this method has worked for me in ALL my guns. Just a suggestion...

XD mags seem to be less durable than some other makes and will not tolerate being stepped on. Before anyone asks why you would step on your mags, it happens alot while running and gunning during competition or target pasters not seeing them may accidently step on them. Its been my experience that an XD mag being just a small amount our of square will tend to hangup in the magwell when its empy or down to 1 or 2 rounds left and your do a mag change.

Thanks again for the replies. I have the graphite around already. I use it to lubricate car locks.

I know it happened with more than one mag, but I will check all the mags to see if it is just a couple that may be deformed.

The good news is I took 2nd place! The bad news is there were only 2 competitors in Production. The other shooter was D classed. I won one of the 5 stages. One stage I completely failed on - zero points after penalties.

You can view results on the USPSA website - club name is Boulder Rifle Club.

I had a good time shooting this year. I went back through some of my old targets and am pleased with the improvement in accuracy. I am even a little more consistent.

I was sure it was more than one mag. I checked all the mags this morning. It was only one that was not releasing properly. I pushed the side with the catch a little and it works fine now! It did not take much so I suppose someone stepped on it or was deformed when it fell with ammo in it. It certainly was not deformed very much so I suspect the latter.

I use to number the mags with a Sharpie, but every time I cleaned them it of course came off. How do you guys mark you mags?

A paint pen or nail polish and a toothpick and write the number on the base pad on my Sig and XD mags. My STI mags are engraved.
