I just started myself and am hooked. As far as advice goes, just listen to what the range officers, match coordinators, experienced shooters have to say. If you've got a question about procedures, scoring, or a certain stage don't be afraid to ask someone. Most importantly, be safe, and have fun. What are you shooting? What weapon will you be using? Good luck and keep us posted how it goes! (If it doesn't go as well as you think it should, don't be hard on yourself... nobody shoots like a pro their first match.)

At this point in the game, I would say, get your hits. Don't rush and make your shots. Speed will come, that is the "easy" part. The hard part is shooting Two Alpha all day long.

+1.
Concentrate on being safe and getting the hits. WALK when movement is called for. FOCUS on keeping your finger off the trigger when you're moving or reloading. LOOK at what you're doing when you reload.

Like others say go slooooow! You'll see the GM/M/A/B shooters busting through there and your thinking man thats the way I should do it....DON"T!! I'm guess you'll be shooting production if USPSA or ESP if IDPA. Either way watch what the guys in those divisions are doing, reload where they reload. Try to reload at 8 shots if you can to give yourself 3 make up shots, 10+1. Try not to shoot to slide lock as its one more movement you have to do.
HAVE FUN!!!

All good advice.
Here's something, you will find suprising and even funny. It's called (I call it) the Cave man symdrome; All of these great advice, will go out the window, when your brain goes into the Caveman mode, which is activated by the evil "Buzzer". Immidiatly followed by addiction behavior, which will lead to need to hear the Buzzer and buying ammo, guns, holsters and driving to more competitions.... Your going to have a blast!

Advice that I was given when first starting out, and I now also give out.. "Slow is fast, and fast is slow". Once you have done a match, you will understand. Just remember to get your hits, and go slow, which will still be much faster than you think it is. If you try and go fast, as others have said, and I agree, you will start missing, and not end up being that fast..
Even then, I am still pretty slow... -Bidah |
