IDPA or IPSC in Detroit, MI or close-by?

hello all,

im looking to get into IDPA or IPSC and wanted to know what would be a club either located in the detroit/dearborn area or close to it. i saw something about the racoon hunter's club, but before i go there i would like to know if there was anything closer than that? also, is anyone a member of the racoon hunters club or been there for IDPA, if so then how is it? im a newbie to both IDPA and IPSC (never shot at either) and would like to be around some good/serious shooters who can properly show me the ropes.

thanks in advance....

I'm not from that area, but here's the link to the club you mentioned...

http://www.raccoonhunters.org/

You can also go to:

www.USPSA.org

and look under the tab that says " where can i find a match?"

One other option is to post your question on:

www.brianenos.com

There are lots of shooters there from MI

Wayne County Raccoon Hunters Club in Romulus currently only does IDPA and, by all accounts, runs first-rate IDPA matches. It appears that their next scheduled IDPA match is on December 16. I was a member there up until a month ago, however, I never shot an IDPA match there (although I did RO a number of IPSC matches there).

Raccoon Hunters used to have a IPSC program, however, it was discontinued a few months ago. Livingston Conservation and Sport Association in Brighton and Tri-County Sportman's League in Saline also host IDPA matches.

The closest IPSC/USPSA matches are at Livingston Gun Club in Brighton and Detroit Sportsmen's Congress in Utica. Links are as follows:

thanks...now i just need to look at what i want to join into, IDPA or IPSC. i have been doing some reading online and from what i can gather it looks like IDPA may be the route i want to take initially. im looking for something that is defensive oriented that lets me use my carry weapon in realistic situations and with the oportunity to compete/test my skills. if anyone has links to a good comparison of the 2 then please post or PM the info. im very interested and would like at the latest in january. i checked out the racoon hunters sight and i think they may the spot for me. but im still looking and trying to decide. thanks again and keep the info comming.

While both will help you to hone your shooting skills and promote safe gun handling, I'm not certain that either one provides what I would call a realistic situation in that the course of fire is laid out ahead of time - allowing one an opportunity to plan prior to engaging the targets. The targets in both are primarily static and predictable - one could also add that they don't shoot back. I guess that how realistic they are is up to the individual. At the end of the day, both are sports, so have fun and be safe.
