Which springs you useing for procduction/L10
I've been useing the 16# spring in my tactical for minor loads and the 22# spring for major loads. What confuses me a little bit is I use a 14# in my 1911 for major with .45 why does the 22#er feel better than the lighter spring? Is it due to the Xd weighing less? If so why do I like the 14#er in my 1911 if it weighs more. I'm confused....

Your 1911 has a recoil spring AND a main spring (in the grip, the hammer pushes this down when you rack the slide.) This spring absorbs some of the initial energy from the slide, the XD doesn't, it has one spring. I don't use anything less than a 18# in the XD.
Plenty of people use a 16# or lower, but it is too easy to push it out of battery, and I don't like that. ps. Rack the slide on your 1911 with the hammer back and then with it forward to illustrate this. Last edited by Loves2Shoot; 10-09-2006 at 04:50 PM. |

Many people do, I think that is why they are under springing the XD. |

I'm using a #16 spring in my XD-40 Tactical for Limited-10 with major loads. I found the stiffer springs had the sights returning really low. The #16 seems to shoot the flattest for me. I run an #16 spring until I can shake the slide out of batter with the striker uncocked. With the stiker cocked if I shake real hard I can get the slide to move out of battery a little bit. Its usually about 2000 rounds between springs. For my XD service I run a 18# spring to ensure a good return to battery but my Tactical I would rather have the flatter shooting.

The service you really don't have much of a choice as the smallest spring I can find is 18#s. I wouldn't have even thought about the 16 for major loads. I'm going to play with the 18/22 some more, maybe get a 20 and see where I'm at. Sat I did some practising with my 9mm 1911 to warm up then went to minor and major loads with the .40 tactical and then to the .45 1911 for L10 and came to a conclusion that I'm going to run the Tactical in L10 and pimp it out lol. I like the mag changes so much better with the xd over the long skinny 1911 mags and it just seems to shoot faster, not to mention cheaper!

I have had reliability issues like Loves2shoot is talking about with lighter than 18# springs in my tactical 9. It will sometimes not go entirely back in to battery while shooting.

When you guys are saying not going back into battery do you mean that all you had to do was tap the back of the slide and it would go right in? I was doing some work with mine yesterday and I had a few rounds do this that I thought was odd. At first I though must not of FC those very good. Got back to the house and they head spaced and measured out fine, even dropped into the barrel fine....wonder if thats because I was useing a 16# spring?
It doesn't really matter anymore as my service is going to be my production and its got a 18# spring gun and my tactical is getting ready to get pimped for L10 lol.

Curious, for those having trouble with a #16 springs in a Tactical is it an XD-9 Tactical or an XD-40 Tactical? I have run about probably 5k through mine since switching to the #16 spring and have used two different #16 springs and I have never had a failure due to not returning to battery.

Mine is a .40 tactical. I say what works for you works for you. I'm moving my tactical to L10 only and will be useing either a 22-20 pound spring for that. My Production gun will be the service and it will run a 18# spring.
