Quality of gun

Does anyone compete IDPA with a entry level 1911? Such as the RIA, Springfield GI, Springfield Mil-Spec, etc. I know i'm not winning any trophies or breaking any records since i've never competed but was curious about your opinion on whether to not quality of a gun was important to a novice like me in IDPA?

I will mostly likely shoot one of my XD's for IDPA but thought a 1911 would be cool too. Looking for advice and some mentoring.

thanks

The most important thing is it is reliable and groups good enough. An unreliable gun is death in competition. A decent trigger is helpful, as poor triggers take more skill to actuate without disturbing the sights. I've shot with many guns in competitions and most modern guns are adequate, some just are not optimal at the higher skill levels.

At the beginner levels it is about making your shots and sticking to your plan. Reliable and acurate enough will take you a long way..

I am lucky I have never felt a nasty trigger in a 1911, but I still think the a nasty trigger in a 1911 would still be better than the one in a stock XD or Glock.

Amen! I sent my XD into Springer for a trigger fix and what an amazement. Thought I was nuts for saying "Its the gun" but I was right - it was. Next XD I buy gets shipped direct to Scott.

Sorry - a little off topic

Nothing wrong, a mil-spec 1911 like that would probably beat a lot of higher-dollar guns that hiccuped, if you shoot well. And the trigger thing is true too. But it's all about fun! Try it and see. What have you got to lose, some roungs downrange?

Well my point of view is, if you already have the lower classs 1911 go ahead and shoot it in a match.

But, if you are planing on buying a 1911 for the speciffic purpose of shooting IDPA I say buy the absolute best one you can afford.

Since you already have XD's, if you don't have a 1911, I say just keep shooting with your XD until you can afford to buy a nice 1911.

I shoot my Colt govt. model in IDPA. While the 1911 and it's many different manufacturers have been known to malfunction, I still think they can be a competitive gun. I used to be a die hard fan of the 1911, but the fact of the matter is if you have a couple thousand dollars laying around and you want a 1911 that will never hiccup either buy a base gun (milspec,G.I.,RIA,Colt) and have numerous upgrades added to them (feed ramp polished, trigger job, better sights, etc....) Or, invest in a Nighthawk,WilsonCombat,Rockriver,etc...

I'm not ragging on the 1911 crowd, because I'm one of them. But I have realized that you don't have to spend the $$$$ for a sound, reliable, functional, and versatile handgun. I love my Colt, but I have a little more faith in my XD. The whole reliabilty issue and the 1911 has been done to death, and I know people out there who own 1911s that have never given any problems, but mine won't eat just any ammo. As for an accurate handgun, the 1911 is hard to beat, but with practice the same could be said about an XD.

Send your 1911 over to Scott for a triggerjob and a factory tune. As big a difference as there was on my XD, his work on my 1911 was even better.

My stock trigger from SA came in at almost 7 pounds and fairly rough. I'm sure TGO could shoot the heck out of it, but me, I need a crisp, light trigger to even have half a chance!!

I only recently started shooting USPSA but strangely the only guns I've seen jam have been the 'pricey' ones, either single or double stack 1911 models. I have three guns: XD40, Glock 19, Kimber 45 Custom II. None of them pricey or fancy. No mods to any of them. Best trigger out of the box: the Kimber. That gun shoots dead on. Next best trigger: The G19. This is the gun I've been shooting in USPSA Production with decent results. Worst OOB trigger: the XD40. If you've got some $$ to spend, try a Kimber 1911...love mine.
