IDPA Shooters - Must Read

Received this email from IDPA today:

Quote:
Attention Club Contacts,

Some match directors have brought to our attention a concern about clubs hosting IDPA matches in the state of New York. Due to the laws in the state of New York, non New York state residents traveling into the state for handgun matches may only do so if the match is sanctioned by the National Rifle Association. A non New York state resident traveling into the state to a match that is not NRA approved may face fines and jail time under New York Laws.

After speaking with the NRA, they have stated that they have no problem sanctioning IDPA matches but will only do so on a club by club basis. They will not issue a blanket approval of the sport. Some of you have stated that you have a letter blanket approving USPSA matches in the state. After speaking with Mr. Gilchrist, the NRA Director for Competitive Shooting, he stated that he was aware of the letter and that it was not a valid letter. You will need to seek sanctioning for those matches as well if your club also hosts that type of sport. We do not want anyone to get fined or jailed.

The form to obtain sanctioning is fairly short and simple to fill out. It is somewhat similar to the form that we use for Sanctioned IDPA matches. You must fill out the NRA form, include two copies of your match program and send it in to the address listed on the top of the NRA form. The match program needs to list:

Dates of matches
Location
Number of stages
Approximated round count
Start times
A statement saying that the match is being run by IDPA rules and guidelines
Any other pertinent information
This really is just the same stuff that you would list on a match flier or on your website. The NRA has informed me that they will sanction multiple dates on one form (monthly matches, etc.) for one calendar year. This will make it easy on the clubs to do.

We here at headquarters, will be posting this information and form on our website for your continued usage. Please take the time to complete the form and send it in. This will help protect your out of state competitors. We will also be placing a notice on the club listing page for New York State, advising competitors to contact the host club before crossing state lines to assure that they have received NRA sanctioning on their matches.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact me at [Robert AT idpa.com] or at 870-545-3886.

Thank you,

Robert Ray

IDPA Headquarters.

Get the Sanctioning even if the Match Isn't in NY

From NRA ILA for New York

"Nonresident target shooters may enter or pass through New York State with handguns for purposes of any NRA-approved competition if the competitor has in his possession a copy of the match program, proof of entry and a pistol license or firearms registration card from his state of residence. The handgun must be unloaded and transported in a fully opaque container."

If you think that someone might drive through New York to come to your match then get the NRA Sanction. If I drive from Maryland to Connecticut for the Connecticut State IDPA match and the match is sanctioned then I'm legal, if not, then I'm at risk of arrest and confinement.

What a pain! They love to make it hard for the non-criminals.

but since Ohio does not require a registration license or card, I guess I can't take a pistol to Lake Placid next year.

So is that why I see more and more NY'ers at PA shoots? because if there are shoots hosted in NY we're liable to be arrested and thrown in jail?

What about states like Texas that don't register firearms, or make you get a pistol permit to get a pistol?

But if you are traveling from MD to CT, then you are covered by interstate transportation laws, which are federal. That is what I understand.. ??
