When our club shot the Postal Match, people did this stage both ways. Some retained, some slide locked. I went the slide lock method and was glad I did. The biggest time hog I see on the video of the slide lock guys is their movement during the reload. Had they stayed in relative shooting position they could have knocked several seconds off their time.

Yes. The only way it is slower is when you need to cover distance or before going prone. Having to do a reload while prone is not much fun and often slow.
