IPSC/IDPA guys got a question

I don't know or care about divisions just want some practical experience and to have a good time. Seen a couple matches and want to get in on it.

So I have two options and won't be able to buy much more for a while. For yall following my troubles lately you know I'm mildly indecisive when I only have the money for 1 more gun right now. Both of these sellers are respected and I trust the word of both.

RIA 1911 fairly customized, haven't pulled the trigger yet (don't know the trigger weight). FS: Rock Island Armory 1911 Customized .45 - MGO Community Forum I have about 200 rounds right now ready to go. Can probably swing another 3 mags so I'll have four and thats the limit of my budget. As soon as possible I would put night sights on it, so a further dip in the ammo budget.

Sig 226, night sights 4 mags Sig226 in 9mm price drop.... - MGO Community Forum can also with the money pick up an extra 600 rounds to practice with, have 200 or so as well (also get some defense rounds 130 but that won't help for learning IPSC) rounds are cheaper.

Both guns are very close together (owners live about 10 miles apart) Should I consider, going to see one, and going to see the other and then either buy it, or go back and buy the other?

I shoot - you really could not go wrong either way. If you might ever care you might take a look at where each pistol would place you (class). I originally thought I'd just shoot for fun, then I found out how much I enjoy the competition.

One big thing will be the cost to shoot.

The most important part would be to choose the one that fits you the best and no one but you can choose that. Go with the one you can use the best. At minimum hold both. If you can - shoot both.

In the end a lot of shooters end up going a different way than they thought they would (in the sport).

I know you don't care about divisions right now, but if both guns fit you - considering where you would shoot with each might help you decide and someday you could change your mind and want to get into all of it deeper.

Also keep in mind that when you shoot you will have to have a good holster and mag carrier to get to enter the shoot.

Could also see if anyone at the matches has either of them you could shoot and put on their holster to draw/fire and see how that works for you.

Good luck

Out of the 2 I would say get the 1911 which will put you in the CDP class in IDPA. Why you ask? Well because if you like the game and want to get in a different class like ESP you can buy another 1911 style gun in 9mm and wont have to retrain your grip or hand movements. I say this because this is what I'm going through right know. I have been shooting ESP with my XDm 9 and just classified in CDP with my TRP. When practicing with the XDm I have found myself trying to disengage the thumb safety but the XDm doesn't have a thumb safety LOL.

Consider scooping up the SIG - it will shoot good and run a long time... 9mm is cheaper so you can shoot more matches, practice, etc. In IDPA you would shoot SSP and in USPSA you can shoot Production Division. A 226 will not hold you back in either sport.

I wouldn't buy either. Why limit yourself to those two choices?

Better idea, buy an XD 45 and shoot it in both. Or later get an XD9 and then you don't have much problem.

Changing from a poly platform to a 1911 platform can be tricky. The slide release and the safety are what make them too different for me. I can run an XD45 much faster than I can run a 1911. So, I don't run a 1911 because the changeover is just a bit much. I just shoot XDs in ESP and CDP then whip the G34 out for SSP. From XD to Glock.......I really don't notice except when I slow down for precision shots and can feel that yucky trigger - which is not stock, but still not close to my PRP triggers.

Good point but I gave my opinion based off the 2 guns the OP posted. I myself am limited as I shoot a XDm which you know is totaly different then the standered XD grip. Money is limited so I have no other option.
