? for IDPA shooters with glasses

I'm pretty new to IDPA, only gone to 4 matches so far, but I've got to do something about my glasses. I'm near sighted and wear progressive bifocals. When target practice, I can tilt my head and get a pretty good sight picture - both eyes open, front sight in or near focus.

Problem is, when I go to a match, the shooting positions are never conducive to tiliting my head to get the front sight in focus. I talked to a fellow on my squad last night, and he has a single vision lens in the right with the focus point where the front sight normally is, and the left lense normal Rx incl bifocal. Says it's a little odd at first to get used to, but it helps him.

I'm thinking about doing this. Anyone done this with their eyeglasses? Or other options to suggest?

Wish I had a answer for you but the best advice I can give you is to go see a ophthalmologist and explain what you are seeing.

I got the answer at an Action Pistol match. Have the reading part of your glasses built in the top not the bottom. Just tilt your head down a bit and your sights come in clear. They do it for electricians and others that have to read stuff over head,

Thanks,Keith

How large are the lenses in your glasses? My new glasses are an inch and a eighth top to bottom. I have the progressive in them and there's no extra room, just a slight tilt all the way through the whole bifocal. Works for me.

Just got back from the eye doctor, getting a new pair of regular glasses and a pair for shooting. The doc agreed the best thing would be to get a single vision lens in the right focused to where the front sight would be, in my case 1.25" from the end of my index finger, the left would be regular progressive. Should have them in a week or so, I'll report back how they work out.

Subscribed to hear how this works out for you. Fascinating! I hope this is the right answer.

There are companies out there who make shooting glasses. I got a pair last year at the IDPA Nationals from a company in AZ.

They put your reading glass in a small area of your glasses where you would be sighting when holding your pistol out. Otherwise they are bifocals. They work great.

I have the same problem. My solution, for now, is to wear non-prescription shooting glasses. My near-sightedness is such that I have a good sight picture with no correction, targets are a little fuzzy but not bad. This of course, won't work for every one but it does work better for me than my progressive bifocals.

Chiming in to keep updated on this thread. Not near sighted or far sighted; I almost fit into "no sighted". Without the tri-focals I probably can't see the gun. So far no problem shooting pistols but heck of a time trying to sight with a rifle. Looks like the answer to my problem may be in this thread.

Well, I picked up my new glasses this afternoon, actually two pairs, one for shooting the other my regular Rx (bifocals). I haven't shot with them yet, but dry firing in the garage at a target above my workbench, it's truly amazing the difference. My regular Rx is progressive bifocals. My shooter glasses are a single Rx in the left eye that focuses on distance, and the right eye is also single Rx that focuses about 1 1/4" beyond the tip of my index finger when both hands are together simulating my normal iso grip.

They're a little goofy feeling when looking at things, as the left eye is in focus but the right eye is slightly blurred. But when sighting on a target, that seems to go away, as each eye now has something to focus on - left eye the target and right eye the front sight. Very awesome now having both things in focus as the same time. Cant remember the last time this has happened.

I've been doing pretty good at the matches lately, but I know I have not been able to see the front sight, like I know I should, and seem to be focusing more on the target and the COF. I guess I've been instinctively point-shooting, and know I need to be able to see the front sight in focus along with the target.

I'm going to try and make it to the range this weekend and see, but from my initial tests in the garage, I gotta give this a big two thumbs up!! The real test will be the next matches in Nov.

When I told my eye doc what I was wanting, she knew what I was asking for, and was very helpful and interested in hearing the results, as she didnt get many requests for glasses like this. She was calling them my "shooters".
