Bug Out Sailboat?

I'm not a prepper yet, mainly because my geography doesn't allow me any good options for bug out or shelter in place. I live roughly between Baltimore and Washington DC, you can't drive out of here even in rush hour, and it's a rather congested suburb situation, with large population centers within walking distance.

My girlfriend has a Severn river waterfront house with deep water pier access. I got to thinking that a bug out sailboat might be the way to go. Something about 25-30' with the obvious mininal live in arrangments. Self-propelled, easy continuous food source, can get anywhere easily compared to the road system, can install effective solar power system. Am I missing anything? Or have I just watched Waterworld too many times?

I used to live in the dc area. Traffic sucks big time. A boat would be the way to go.

I would do something a little more elaborate. I would get something like a houseboat that has a large flat roof and set up solar and wind power on it. I would use electric motors for drive with a diesel generator for backup power or possibly a dual drive system in case the electric motor craps on you. You can live quite comfortably on a setup like that and out on the water you get plenty of sun and wind for power. Get some form of water desalination going and some kind of reliable fish catching gear and you have a pretty self sustainable little getaway, at least for a few months. It won't win any speed contests but with the right motor it should get you around the bay fairly quickly. You can always keep a zodiac nearby and use it to get around while keeping the ship anchored somewhere safer.

My biggest worry with that is weather. It can get a little scary if you cannot go to shore in bad weather.

I lived in Florida on my houseboat for 20 years in salt water. The biggest problem I had was fresh water. You can live pretty easy with a fishing pole and a barbecue..

I think a sailboat would be a great escape option, but I'd want a decent inboard diesel engine in case bug-out time doesn't have ideal winds.

Another thing to consider is; you better get to it right away as even people without a boat might think a boat is a great idea. I watched 2 show total, but it was one section of the "Preppers" that really had me laughing. The guy and kids were going to sit in their bunker for 60 days while dad's girlfriend keeps watch, then after 60 days of the world falling apart with no improvements in sight, they think they can just stroll to their well equipped sailboat and it would still be there!
