SHTF Boots
I'm looking for a good set of boots for SHTF and other various tasks. I do not plan to use them on a daily basis right now. Looking mainly to hike in them every so often and in a worst case scenario they would be my go to boots in the event of a SHTF disaster.
What I'm looking for: Tall boot that comes up above the ankle in an 9 inch style, good ankle support, lace up (no zip preferred, but if I really don't mind either way), waterproof a must, no need to be sub-zero though. I would prefer a good leather/cordura design or something that is a nice synthetic that will last. And most importantly, something that won't break the bank. I'd prefer them to be under the $100 mark, but I know for a quality set of boots, that's pretty much unheard of.
With that in mind, what boots do you run? What boots would you suggest I look into?

I had a pair of Bates for around 2 1/2 years and loved them but didn't love the price... and then this year I decided to try out Guide gear boots. I got to tell ya I'm really impressed, there a pair of side zipper waterproof boots and they were only $50 and I were all the time.

Go with Merrell, Patagonia, Lowa, Keen, Marmot, basically any boot you find at REI.

Thanks for the insight guys. I really want to try some of these on before I purchase a set. I think I'll take a trip to my local surplus store and hiking store, see what they have to offer in store. I'm also hoping I may be able to pick something up at the gun show next month, but from what I remember, the prices there on everything but ammo really stink.

If they are good for combat troops...they should hold up pretty dang well in a SHTF situation

I prefer 6" just above the ankle boots. They are not as heavy, not as hot as the taller boots, but still give me the needed ankle support. I work in 6" boots on a regular basis.
My Hi Tech boots have lasted me years.

I saw this ad just the other day on LA Police gear. If I hadn't just bought a new pair of work boots and if these weren't 8" I'd buy them.
See what it says in the description? "outsole separation is almost eliminated" if you aren't familiar with work or tactical boots, this is where most low cost boots fail. Cheaper boots may fit and feel great in the store but within 6 months of continuous use, especially if you do a lot of climbing or squating in them, this is where they start to come apart. From the widest part of the boot along up to the toe boots start to seperate from the sole then water, mud and moister seep in. You end up with wet socks and damp feet leading to foot issues if you don't have something else to wear.
My advice is find something you like, wear it a LOT [jog, work, hike etc.] and after 6 months if they are holding up well buy another pair. Wear this new pair to break in well, then tuck them away with your SHTF gear.
