If you are hunting small game, figure a bulk pack of 22lr every year or 2 to keep the family fed. for self defense, assuming you have a little trigger control, I'd estimate a 50 pack of HPs for a sidearm a year tops. get in more fights than that, and even Wyatt Earp wouldn't last out the year.

anyone who has a thousand rounds in every caliber for SHTF must be planning on plenty of target practice in their downtime between roving hordes of zombies
Wow! This is the 1st reasonalbe response to one of these threads that I've read across several boards.

Reasonable and rationale are two words that don't come to mind when I think SHTF

But they should come to mind when preparing for for the unreasonable and irrational.

I think alot of people get caught up in thinking that when the economy collapses it's going to be like WWIII on our home front. My opinion is it's going to be more like how am I going to feed my family today. Therefore I am a fan of stocking up on 22 lr's. Great for small game. Plus I wouldn't be afraid to use it for personal protection. Plus, don't forget about a good stock of 12 gauge for those birdies.

That is way off in my opinion. Assuming you drop an animal on EVERY shot, (and thats not going to happen in the real world) thats less than one animal a day. I wouldn't want to count on feeding the family on one squirrel a day, and know that every time I miss is a day we don't eat.

I see it like this if shtf and socitey falls. Game will wipe out pretty quick with no season or bag limit. With that said.22, .223 ,.45, and 12 GA. For me. But that is for person defense and protection. As for hunting bow and xbow just for the quiet kill. A gun can be heard from a distance and if you are out hunting and kill something if there is 10 hunger crazed rednecks around guess what they are going to be hunting? You for your kill. So that is why I choose my bow and my. 45 on my hip for hunting. And I strongly suggest picking up a few dozen yoyos for fishing. Put them out bait and set them walk away and come back later to check them that way you can be doing other stuff to provide on the home front.

Other than that I stock up just to weather periods of low supply (and hence super high prices) like after the election of 2008 and now though no one is talking about it by September this year you won't be able to buy any ammo or AR rifles again for 6 months as idiots freak out over the next election!

I like to read SHFT fiction. I am almost done reading "Lights Outs". One of the common themes of all the SHFT fiction I have read so far suggests that whatever I have on hand right now IS NEVER ENOUGH.

I just got done with world made by hand. And will start Lucifer's hammer tomorrow. But I do the audio book thing... listen while I drive to work and back (2 hour round trip) and lunch.
