I think they should change the name of the show from "Doomsday Preppers" to "People Who Will Be Killed For Their Food In SHTF Situation Because They Won't Be Able To Defend Themselves Or Their Property."

I don't want to knock anyone for doing their best to prep. I wish more people would do it. That being said...that girl is going to die. She's young so I hope the military and aging bring her some wisdom. Houston has a few million people in it...if things start getting bad you get out of dodge. Staying home and waiting 4 weeks before you walk through the city is lunacy.

By the way WinterWizard, that's funny.

She might have a better chance than you think. The state of Texas should be one of the first to clean up the trash in SHTF.

They can't control the cartels in Houston now. I can't imagine how they will control the gangs if it hits the fan. Hope I'm wrong though.

I liked some of the ideas that the guy in LA had about eating different plants and such. I think alot of people overlook the fact that there is alot of free food out there under their noses but just don't see it. The main downfall of picking wild plants to eat is if there are toxins spread over them or radiation from a nuclear incident. A good Botany book over two wouldn't hurt to have with your gear and a boy scout book too.

The people using shipping containers have a good idea as long as they have enough people dedicated to stay there and defend what they have. I think they need to clear the area around their house/compound a little further out than what they have right now, say 1/4 mile in all directions. Their bulletproof test was joke for sure. Shooting a 22 at the corner of a stell container isn't going to do anything except mar the finish. A better test would have shoot the side of the container with a 308 or similar cartridge from about 100 yards. Their food storage setup needs a little revision tho. All those jars and cans stacked on the shelves but it didn't appear there was anything that would keep them from falling off.

I liked some of the power generation systems they have. The one windmill looked like a fan attached to the shaft of a Chevy style altenator which are dirt cheap to buy from your local auto parts store. That one got me thinking about rigging up 1 or 2 on my garage to help heat it during winter, it's always windy where I live anyways. And the methane cooking fuel made from the waste of pigs and other animals is actually pretty slick. Not only can you use it for cooking but also as a heating fuel source and with proper modifications a fuel source for vehicles and power generators.

The people in New England have good ideas and skills, as far as getting the whole community involved if there is a situation, as they say there is defense in numbers, but if you refuse to give yourself the means to protect yourself and others and your property, your just asking for the worst to happen to yourself. I'd still like to know what that skinny guy is smoking, what a marooooon.

remember that these people are probably at these peoples homes for a full day or more, they edit down everything they say, I'm willing to bet that some of these people are prepared for more than one situation than just the one shown and natgeo decided to show it in a certain manner.

BTW i'm a big math geek, a single person would need 25lbs of rice, 25lbs of pinto beans, 10lbs of oatmeal and 25 pounds of flour (for bread) to have roughly 1,000 calories from carbs a day for 3 months. That should cost you less than $100. I dont understand how that couple can claim they have 100K in food, even dehydrated meat would require a huge place to store it.

I went to Costco today for lunch (who can beat $1.99 pizza or $1.50 hot dogs and drink?) anyway decided to stop and look at prices of bulk rice, beans, oats, pasta, sugar, and cases of water.
Long grain rice 50lbs- $18.59
Jasmine rice 50lbs- $29.99
Basmati rice 20lbs- $13.99
Pinto beans (only beans in bulk available) 25lbs- $18.99
All purpose flour 50lbs- $13.39
white sugar 50lbs- $28.99
Oats 10lbs- $7.89
Spaghetti pasta 8.8lbs- $7.99
water 35 bottles 16.9oz- $3.75

so for two people for 3 months you can expect
50lbs of beans, rice, flour and sugar, 20 lbs of oats, 8.8lbs of pasta, and 12 cases of water to cook all of that = $167.72
and weigh 675lbs

I should have looked at yeast, salt, and other stuff also but hey it was my lunch break.
