Shotguns are only really good for small fast moving objects and practicing targeting long guns rapidly. Get a semi-auto 22lr and stock up on that ammo before you overly stock up on shotgun ammo if you are planning for SHTF. You'd be better off and do it cheaper.
It also matters what kind of shotgun you have to some degree. With a double barrel, you might consider going light on slugs (especially since you have a real rifle) and supplement with cut shells in a bind.

Shotguns are great for large, relatively slow moving targets at distances of 30 yards or less. I'd hate to try to bring down a motivated looter/home invader/etc. with a .22.
Suggested minimum: 500 rounds 00 Buck per person + 1000 rounds Upland Game loads per person.

The pistol in the XD family he probably has, will do a better job in tight conditions were a nice long shotgun could be easily grabbed.
Just how motivated would the invader have to be to keep advancing into a hail of 22 fire? That is assuming he was still able. Are you planning on fighting off "28 days later" type "zombies" from your bedroom for an extended time? so what would you suggested ammo load cost? $750+? For that much money, best to invest in a cheap combat rifle and a smaller load out, plus the 22 and its ammo reserve.

You've just have to look around. I bought 600 rounds of 00 off of craigslist for 70 dollars. 1000 rounds of bird shot will run you a bit over 200 dollars. I live in a family of shotgun hunters being that I live in IL a shot gun is all you can use. And for the people saying get a rifle I dropped a deer at a 150 plus yards this year clean kill. Might not have the ammo capacity and might be to heavy but your not going to war my guess is you'll never shoot at anybody and if you do my next guess is it'll be inside 20-30 yards.

But he wasn't asking about pistols or .22's was he? Oh, BTW, I have 500 rounds of 00 Buck that I'll happily sell you for $750.

My quick search showed buck going for just over a dollar a round and over a quarter a round for the cheap stuff, that is where my $750 number came from with your suggested 500 and 1000. I wouldn't suggest reloads for bulk storage because I wouldn't trust them to not absorb humidity. pointing out alternative ways to spend limited funds is always a valid suggestion. I am just pointing out how you can actually save money by getting a new gun.

Be sure to really consider what purposes you're keeping each type for. Birdshot makes a great round for ammo/warning shots in a shtf situation, but living in the city, I wouldn't stockpile it since bird hunting would be severely limited. Buck on the other hand...

I think the best way to build your ammo selection is to pick pick up a $20 or $30 worth every payday.

I think that you get as many rounds for each of your firearms that you can. You can never have too much!
