This is probably too late but here are a few easy things to check when looking at a used vehicle:

  • Check the oil and make sure it is at the correct levels and take note of the coloration (black vs. brown or dark brown). Obviously if there is any water (diluted look to the oil) this is a huge problem and I would walk away immediately
  • If it is an automatic, check the fluid levels there as well (make sure the fluid is red or close to red as possible)
  • Check to see if there is any water/coolant in the radiator (pull the radiator cap off). Also check to see if the appropriate water/coolant levels are in the reservoir. Note: if the coolant is rusty in color, they probably have not flushed the coolant in a long time which will show you how good of a mechanic they are since most will keep an eye on this.
  • Check for excessive leaks around the valve cover(s).
  • Check the power steering fluid levels.
  • Check to see how clean the air filter is....
These are just a few things that I would take notice of when purchasing a used vehicle. There are other things but not as easy as the list above

jacking up each of the front tires and giving them a little wiggle is probably worth doing too.

Can't beat a jeep for shtf. Got a 2010 2dr with 3.5 lift, 35" tires, locking diffs, winch, on board air, custom bumpers, 4 jerry can holder, hi-lift jack, axe, aux. lighting, and swivel mount for ak that goes in factory hole in roll bar. I keep .45 with 13rd. clips, underfolder ak with 6 30rd mags, and .357 revolver in there and a bugout bag.

those plastic fascia bumpers may surprise you... the one on my 2000 Trooper took out a telephone pole and 50 ft of fence. Lost a head light and a dent in the bumper, but drove home... And my daughter learned a lesson on dirt road and brakes.
