Shotgun mythbusting - chapter two - video

I got a lot of interesting feedback when I posted my first video on shotgun mythbusting; namely, busting the myth that you do not have to aim a shotgun but can simply point it from your hip and be assured of accurate shot placement, in a self-defense situation, using 00 Buck.

Based on comments received, I shot a "Chapter Two" showing an example of hip shooting and aimed shooting, using 00 Buck.

In a self-defense situation, when you are using 00 Buck, inside your home, where you do NOT want stray pellets penetrating into other rooms, or even other houses, you must aim your shotgun, that is, shoulder it and sight it, not simply rely on point-shooting from your hip.

So, here you go. As far as I'm concerned the myth is busted.

What do you think? Take a look and let me know.

Arrow You definitely need to shoulder it!

After seeing the video, you definitely need to shoulder your shotgun! That first shot was a crazy miss!

Hipfire takes some practice, and it's definitely not a good idea if you can get your shotgun to your shoulder. The ONLY time I'd try a hipfire shot in a HD/SD situation is if I couldn't get my gun to my shoulder for some reason.

I spent some time screwing around with hip firing my mossberg a while back. Also tried it with the SKS. I can do OK up to 15 yds or so, hitting a silhouette target. Not sure it will ever be a practical skill, but had to try it.

These guys don't need to shoulder a shotgun to be accurate:

Gould Brothers Exhibition Shooting 2011 (Shotgun Trick Shooting) - YouTube

Several points in response:

  1. They are not shooting 00 Buck, but birdshot BBs.
  2. They are not defending their loved ones.
  3. They are not shooting humans, but bits of clay.
  4. They are not in a high-stress home defense situation.
  5. They don't have to worry about any lead missing the target.
  6. Oh, one more thing: you and I aren't them!!

Very significant differences here between shooting clays and shooting bad guys.

I post in jest. It's some darn good shooting and most likely doesn't resemble most of us here on the forum.

No doubt, in my case:

  1. They are a lot younger.
  2. They are light lighter.

It's that last bit that's most important.

it's like hip shooting a pistol. It's hard to hit anything.

another reason why I can't stand just a pistol grip on a shotgun. Hard to aim and unpleasant to shoot.

never heard this myth before. Yes shotguns are the best for point and shoot, but you do need to look down the barrel to point it properly.

and I will make one quick note about the clays video. you don't dust clays with only contacting outerlying pellets, you have to hit with the larger concentration toward the center

Nice video.

I've been saying the same thing for years. There is absolutely no benefit to hipshooting a shotgun. NONE.

And the better chance of overpenetration with 00 buck is why I switched to an AR15 for repelling boarders.

For part three--you need to see if simply the sound of the slide being racked can make one soil their shorts. According to many on the internets, this is an article of faith...

I agree and I am willing to bet if you threw man sized targets into the air they could get all 9 00 pellets on target every time.
