I don't own one, but I have shot my buddy's quite a few times, and I'm not dead set running out the door and buying one, the gun has it's nicer qualities, but also some draw backs.

I bought one ten or more years ago when nobody ever heard of them and they were cheap ($179). i think I converted it about 5 years after that before there were hi-cap mags for it and it became popular. It is still a pretty fun gun to play with. Kind of a range toy. I don't think I would pay the kind of money the are going for now but if you got the dough, go for it.

i was really close to getting a saiga 12 last year but i couldn't justify the price. they have come down a little since then but i'm not in the market anymore.

one of the biggest problems that i read/saw on youtube is what they call a vodka gun. basically the holes for the gas don't line up with the port for the gas tube and that's what caused the problems. my understanding was all you had to do was get a drill and make two new holes and you were good to go.

That may or may not be true. Lots of stuff you hear/see on the internet is propagated by aftermarket suppliers of gun doo-dads and foo-foo. Seems like no gun is good out the box, you have to add one thing or another to "make it work". Tell a lie enough times and it becomes fact. Maybe Saiga quality went down hill after I bought my 12 back in 2000, or maybe people have bought into the hype that they need to be fixed.

Oh, and they were cool guns back when they were cheap. Too expensive these days to fool with IMO.
