I also like the forward trigger safety.

Not knowing better I thought, pay $450 for a plain jane, or for $50 more, get the plain jane with all the "hook-upz" i.e. the blackwater version
thanks to this forum I NOW know all those "hook-upz" are garbage..
I'm back to my original bean stalk, the 51660...
... just trying to decide if $50 more is worth it to get the above with a speedstock and GHOST RING sites.. in other words the 51668..
my problem being, never having shot a shotty before and NOT finding a dealer with them for me to handle..
I'm sure if I was able to handle each in the store I would be able to make my decision on my own...but instead I must rely on you gentlemen..
I got time tho.. I ain't trying to rush it,... plus couple of gun shows coming up in a month, so if need be I'll hold out on the chance some1 there might got it on display...
but in the meantime i'm on the internet soaking up that knowledge!!
at most all i'll ever want on it is a flashlight, maybe.. but thanks for the ninja tip advise,
boris, outta curiosity, what acc's do you have on your shotguns if any? pic's?
peace

Ghost rings are nice, and I like speedfeed stocks...
However, if you just want a fast handling, easy to use shotty, I'd stick with the 51660, and add a tritium front sight. Much faster to use than ghost rings. Add a speedfeed stock later, if you choose.

a Maverick 88 would make a fine first shotgun.
I'm a fan of the the two barrel package for the 500 though.
you can get a 28" Accuchoke barrel for trap/hunting use and the 18.5 cylinder bore for home defense purposes.
I'm not a fan of a pistol grip though...it's difficult to shot well with and if you have your wrist slightly out of line you're gonna be in for some pain.
<----has a Mossberg 500 still wearing American walnut stocks but an 18.5" barrel with a meprolight tritium bead replacing the original brass bead.

ha, ha, Boris, thanks for the offer, I will keep that in mind if I'm ever in your neck of the woods.. and d@m thats a sweet piece you got there, I'm mad green with envy!!
before I discovered the internet and its wealth of information, I was all set to go with the Mavirick 88, the 31046 I believe.. but then they were sold out everywhere and when they became avaliable again they had mysteriously gone up in price by about $50!! By that time my research had introduced me to the 590a1, so I gave up on the mav 88..
but you mentioning it here got me interested again and the PRICE is normalized again, they are back to the $200 range!!
the gun show is weekend after next.. d@mmit do i hold off and wait on the chance that I might b able to "pick" it up in person or jus shoot for gold and order on the internet.. d@m!!! decisions, decisions..
barring the gun show debacle (above) I think I'm set..
gonna COP BOTH of em!!!
1. 51660 590a1 $440 no speedfeed stock and ONly a bead on it..
2. Mav 88 31046 $200 essentially the same as above but the cheaper version.. i.e. no heavy barrel and plastic safety...
just had some more quick questions..
1. I tried googling but this can't be right... i see speedfeest stocks on sale for $80-100?? really? Wouldn't i be able to make my $$ back by getting the 51668 and then sellin the speefeed stock for half that(ie $40) in a private sale?
2. Bud's Guns get rave reviews on the internet, anyone here have personal experience? $700 for both on they website, not bad and FREE SHIPPING!!
3. Assuming I did as above in #1, sold my speedfeed stock for like $40, what would I replace it with and how much would that cost?
4. Would either of these be useful as a deer hunting shotgun or any kind of hunting gun? or is that a whole nother world of learning..
well gents I think thats it for now. its been a long hard journey since page 1 of my post.., I have learned alot on this site and i really appreciate it..
the journey's end is at hand.. just a matter of me pulling the trigger now... or waitin for the phreakin gun show..
and yeah having never shot a shotgun before, I realize 2 at the same time may be overkill.. BUT remember this is for when the Mayan's put an end to our world type of mentaility....plus i figure the 590a1 will be the zombie/shtf/end of the world go to piece.. and the mav 88 will be the trusty workhorse, where I cut my teeth on.. the beater, the one you chuck in the back when the jakes pull you over.. the one with the taped up grip.. ect, ect u get the pic, and chill out college boy obviously i'm jokin..
but yeah i know, i'm annoying but like I said I got nowhere else to go and learn about all this stuff!! Shotties are a strange and mysterious world to me.. previously my fortay was in biscuits and heaterz...
THANKS AGAIN!
peace

Hay folks new owner of a 590a1 model 51772 BLACKWATER lets just say this ain't grand dads 870 or my beloved ITHICA 37.Seeing how this is going to be set for home defense a tactile 200 lumen light is a must because i dont like to aim at what i cant see and a light that bright can have horrible effects on a zombies night vision. Also on my list to attach is a vertical grip to help shorten the length of pull and for controll on that critical follow up.That makes the tri rail forend grate for me.I love the fact that this is a mill-spec tested shotgun.Had thoughts of changing the stock but after 2 box's of oo buck three box's #4 buck ,my own choice for home defense,I really came to like the speed feed stock(it never hurts to have a few slugs handy) and the shock absorbing pad.I like the ghost ring site but may due some thing with that as well, would some sort of red dot be worth the investment?

1. I would not get the speed feed stock. I use a pouch that attaches to the stock that I can take off when I hunt with it. I have the spec ops flap shell holder that holds 8 rounds. I like it better than a speed feed stock.
2. dunno lol...
3. I would just get the regular stock to begin with and not worry about the re selling at all and get something that goes on the stock for a reload.
4. I am going to use mine for deer hunting and with just the plain ole brass bead I can kill a deer out to 80 yards with a Foster pill slug all day long. I also use it for small game with shot loads. In 12 gauge it holds too many pellets IMO for most small game and I hate all the tiny pellets in my meat. I use #5 shot for everything. Enough pellets to fill a pattern but not sooooo many I fill my meat full of lead and it typicaly penetrates better than smaller shot anyway making up for fewer pellets.
As always. This is what works for me. You might do things a little different and thats the great thing about guns. Do it your way and who cares what anyone else says. The tacticool guys at matches make fun of me for the lack of ninja chit on my shotgun and the hunters give me crap about shooting critters with a riot gun. I cann't win with any crowd I hang out with but she gets it done for both purposes. Get what makes you all warm and fuzzy, then I can poke some fun at you for it .

Thanks .40-.45 the wife knows how boys and their toys can be and seeing how i have some extra time on my hands here are the changes i want to make down the line.I have not learned how to load a pix yet but will have a photo up soon.Another person told me to skip the idea of a red -dot but to change the front sight to to the truglo shotgun sight or a Big Dot tritium night sight, also going to change from the two point sling the store owner threw in,held 15 shells and is handy,to a one-point connection sling something like i have seen on a custom NIGHTHAWK.Going out today 5 box's of Remington HD Ultimate Home Defense. It is a mixed load of No.2 and No.4 tungsten-bronze pellets.I was told it will do the job i want as well as cut down on over penetration. Also bought a few box's Federal personal defense buckshot. They tried to see if i would buy the rubber ball shells, but to me their for crowd control not for the home.
