When you can get a 12ga that will cost almost the same and kick equivalent to a .410 when you use light 00 shells, why would you ever select a .410 for defense when you have the choice?

well...becuase the op state he has a 12 gauge and doesn't feel his GF can handle it is was considering buying her a .410 that he found is all.

this is deffinately a learning experience for both my gf and i at the same time. im gonna put her on my Mossy and see how she does shooting bird shot today. based on that i'll go from there. i may try her on the 00 Buck depending on the initial reaction she has.
each and every post will be very helpful in me making my decision.

my wife is all of 5 5 120 and she can fire our mossy 500 with no problem at all. i had her shoulder fire it a couple of times and then had her to hip fire it, also with no problems. i told her she probably will not have time to raise it to her shoulder to fire it and with a shotty all you need to do is point and pull. then i loaded it up with 00 so she could feel the difference and she shot it with no problems. actually, she liked it!

lol, just got back from shooting today. she went in eager to shoot it, but when it came down to it she almost chickened out. we set up some water jugs and then went over the do's and don't's. showed her a couple of different stances she could use to get comfortable with it. lol, she was worried about it kicking hard enough to knock her backwards. gave her a little pep talk and tried to get her relaxed. finally did get her to shoot it and her face lit up. she says "that ain't bad at all" and preceded to shoot the rest of the shells. got her some good trigger time today on it as well as my XD, which she loved btw.
i believe im gonna set her up with a charles daly or mossberg youth 20 ga. really think that the 12 ga is a bit much for her right away even with the birdshot loaded. that'll be easy on the wallet and it'll be good to get her trained on. her being left handed is gonna be a pain though because she had trouble with stance and grip of the shotty and also a few issues with how to grip the XD.
had my first FTF with her shooting the XD, but it was operator error as the slide failed to chamber the last round. guess thats from limp wristing?
anyway, she loves it and im happy with her first outing.

With a mobile home, a shotgun is most deffinitely the way to go. A bullet can easily pass through 3 trailers without stopping. Yes 3 entire trailers. Probably more. Her safety is important, but so is the safety of her neighbors. You made the right choice on a shotgun for home defense in that situation. I'd use #4 buck in it to make sure it stays in the trailer.

how about a Hi-point 9 or 40 carbine?
I'd trust either of those to stop a BG more than a 410. you also get a multishot semi auto vs a whatever the shotty is you are looking at

I think a youth 20 gauge is the way to go.

.410 will work, but 12ga is optimal, because the larger the shell, the less likely it'll bounce and kill your unborn child.
