Problems with XD45 and P45HST1 Ammunition

Went to the range with my XD45 Service to see how well it ate some Federal P45HST1 ammunition (+P). Up until now I've had around 400 rounds of WWB FMJ without any issues.

With P45HST1 I had four or five failures to feed in the first 50 rounds. In each case, it looked like the slide did not close all the way. In two instances, the nose of the round was jammed up against the top of the chamber (and a small dent in the side of the case was formed), and in the other instances the rounds were angled nose down in the magazine.

I noticed afterwards that the magazines did not release freely anymore, nor could I insert the magazines as easily as before. I found that a slight bulge had formed on the top rear of the magazine (right in the trough of the [__] formed by the feed lips). This occured on all magazines I had a failure to feed in I believe. The magazines still fed FMJ reliably, but I was afraid of additional damage if I kept firing the P45HST1.

I was really disappointed that it didn't feed reliably as the ammunition was impressive on paper. I plan on trying 230 gr gold dots next...

Has anyone else experienced similar occurances with this ammunition or the bulges on the magazines?

Ive heard others here have had problems using +p ammo, and not just one brand. I have never used it myself though, I dont think I would trust it after hearing different stories.

I would suggest contacting Springfield and telling them about the mags. I happened to be showing my XD45 to one of the SA reps last Fall and he noticed trouble with the mag not falling free. When he took it out he noticed the back of the mag right at the top rear was damaged from being slammed back against the frame under recoil. He told me some of the XD45 mags had come thru made of a slightly different steel than the specs called for. He promptly pulled out a new mag and gave it do me. He also showed me how to straighten the old mag; just takes some judicious work with a small hammer to smooth it back out. I suspect this might be problem you're having and the us of +P ammo probably aggravated something that was already happening.

I would definitely give SA a call because the XDs are all rated to handle +P ammo.

Please keep us posted on what you find out. I was thinking of running some +P through my baby, but will wait until I find out more from people on here.

Same thing happend to me!

Background: I just bought a XD .45acp compact.

I went to the range for the first time. Shot 80 rounds of Winchester white box and then went to shoot some federal HST +p. The second round fired failed to load. The nose caught the chamber ramp just as the OP described.

I pulled the slide back and the remaining rounds (13 round mag) fired fine.

I later fired 10 more rounds through the 10 round mag. without issue.

I am a little leery of using the HSt's as my carry ammo now. I will be back to the range to do more testing before I am confident.

Too bad I already bought 600 rounds of the HST!

Burncycle, have you contacted Springfield? I am interested in seeing what they have to say about the +P HST ammo. I am hoping that my FTL was a isolated incident. (Maybe I just need to buy a heavier recoil spring)

It's not so much of a problem with the +P rating, it's the width of the HST hollowpoint cavity. It's TOO WIDE for many platforms to feed reliably (not just XDs).

At least that's been my experience with HST in several 1911s & CZs. Never tried it in my XD45s because of past problems.

That's weird, I have started using Federal HST+P 230grn as my sole personal defense round. I have never had a single problem. Sounds to me like a magazine issue....are they 13round mags?

If you guys want to get rid of your Federal HST that isn't working for you, feel free to PM me.

He is right on the money. these are commonly known as flying ashtrays. The hollowpoint is too large and in some instances won't feed correctly unless the pistol is set up for h.p. ammo. The feed lips being bent I would suspect are from the slide slamming into the round which is still in the magazine partially, the jam and resulting attempt to go into battery are a probable cause for the bent lips. YMMV Floyd
