160 Round Mystery - Solved!

Finally on day 5 with my new XDm compact 3.8 and fired 400 flawless rounds. Issues started on Day 1 - here but decided it's time to try out the teflon coated reloads.

400 was all I could get out of her for two reasons:

1. My hands are sore
2. I'm out of bullets

I'm pretty sure my reloads aren't any better than the the factory FMJs so what did I do differently?

... that's right! I lubed it differently!

My 1911s get a fair amount, sometimes too much that I see oil splatter on the frame after my first few shots. Yes, GUILTY! I never made such a big deal of it because I detail strip my 1911s anyway. (Of course the EDC 1911 gets less lube.) I love tinkering with it as much as shooting it. I do know that striker fired systems should be kept away from oil (at least in the port) so I was careful not to lube it the same way I would my 1911s. Taking it even further, I ran it almost dry and that seems to be the real answer.

Perhaps I still over lubed my XDm (on days 1-3) that the powder build up got exponentially worse on the ejector and extractor. From now on, I'll be keeping an eye on that.

problem solved - stubborn old shooter out!

I would take the striker completely out (5 min task to R&R) and clean the channel, striker and spring off all oily residue. Then either switch to a non-residue lubricant like 100% silicone spray (use 5-6 light coats with 5-10 min dry time between coats) or other "residue free" products.

If you EVER used oil on the striker or in places around it, you have in all probability a gooey mess in there.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely look into that. Any dry lubes you can suggest? I just came across Hoppe's Dry Lube but have never heard about it. Any thoughts?

TIA

I'm notorious for using "generic" stuff. The can of dry lube is simply labeled "100% Silicone Spray". I think it was from the electric isle in the mega jumbo hardware store.

But as long as the products state no residue, you should be good.

Well you mentioned "dry lube", so I just have to ask this. I've never tried it myself, and never heard of it, but I do wonder...

Powdered graphite is very dry, and works great in locks, etc. Up until very lately, I'd never owned a polymer framed gun. So I don't know.

I lubed the heck out of my 1911, TriFlon used to be my favorite, because it seemed to like it. I've ran out of TriFlon, so I've used other stuff in the 1911.

Has anyone here ever tried using powdered graphite in an XDM or similar gun?

Just wondering...

Thanks,

Duane

Hi, have seen that brand at Ace down here, can I use it on rails, or just about anywhere in the gun totally replacing the good old gun oil as main lubricant? Please school me on this 'coz I have this T22 that gets so dirty, after a couple hundred rounds with even a thin oil applied to it.TIA

I do, but I also use a small amount of grease applied with a tooth pick on the metal to metal wear points. There are all sorts of gun greases out there, but being a tightwad, I use "synthetic disc brake caliper grease". It's good stuff, but YMMV.

On the 100% silicone sprays, there are other benefits. The stuff makes the surface repel water and it also makes it easier to wipe clean as the residue won't adhere strongly to it. But, I mostly use it where I don't want a grease or oil to be. On a striker gun, that's the striker and striker channel. But I do spray the whole gun when I'll be in the weather like hunting and the forecast calls for rain or snow.
