Keep practicing. The XD has a habit of exposing poor grip and trigger discipline. Welcome to the site, enjoy your stay. We have a great bunch of (opinionated) people here.

And as for the Kimber being "higher quality", and thus the difference in groups: EL OH freakin' EL... (See what I said about opinions?)

Ok..you have two defined groups

YOU tell us the problem

1911 style trigger = breaking with hardly any takeup or creep with crisp break
XD style trigger has considerable slack/play with a short crisp break

Learning your pistols trigger characteristics and realizing that the pistol can outshoot you = priceless

I had a hard time getting poa with my glock. After a few hundered rounds it straightens out. But you might want to try a rubber grip on the handgun. If your milking it it may help.

Also to note, you fired the steel framed (heavier) kimber first, and then shot the xdm a polymer gun. The xdm is going to have more felt recoil and thus many people tend to grip the gun too tight, as the diagram shows. I see this all the time.

When I train new shooters, the first thing I do is put one bullet in the gun. Show the shooter the proper grip and stance, then let them fire the one bullet. That way, the person understands the feel of the gun and recoil. Based on where the bullet hits the target, I'll make corrections as needed.

The first gun my sister shot was a rented S&W 1911 w/ crimson trace grips (she has expensive taste, no tiny little pink .30 for her) and she did ok with the .45 (again, a steel gun. Shooting my .40 PX4 was a different story. Even considering the snap/recoil taming rotating barrel, it took her about 150 rounds to feel comfortable with it. The more you practice, the better you'll get.

I've been shooting for 25 years, and I shoot .40's and .45's one handed all day long and destroy targets at 75 feet with my Beretta one handed.

Sorry for the long rant.

^ that (actually just about all of them^^^).

Try to pull the trigger back and hold it just short of the gun firing all the while holding steady on target. Then s l o o w l y move the trigger back a wee bit more. After it fires, hold the trigger back until you are back on target --> then move the trigger forward ever so slightly until you feel it go CLICK and reset. From there it's just a whisker away from the next shot.

funny, i had the opposite problem, shooting hi powers and 1911's groups were bigger, but in same ammo, much tighter with the xd's. they fit my hand better and seems to be less felt recoil
