Out of eleven 13 round mags fired out of my NEW XD45 (with the manual thumb safety) one magazine dropped about 1/4 inch out while I was shooting. Here are the facts:
1. It happened after emptying a full magazine. The slide locked back. I removed the empty magazine and inserted a new 13 round magazine. I pulled the slide rearward, to drop the slide stop, then released the slide to load the first round in the chamber.
2. I have never owned any handguns with ambidextrous mag release buttons.
3. I bought and sold a NEW XD45 about 18 months ago because this happened three times with that one.
4. I called Springfield Armory customer service and they said that they have never heard of this before and that the magazine falling out is next to impossible to happen and that the problem likely rests with me.
5. I strongly believe that something is wrong with MY technique with this gun.
6. Everything else about this gun has been absolutely flawless and I really like this gun.
7. I think my finger may have partially (or fully) pressed one of the mag release buttons while racking the slide. The mag drop happened at about round #3 or 4.
Has this happened to anyone else here? If so, how did you overcome it?
If not, how would you suggest that I overcome it? I have been practicing. The mag drop occurred on the 5th magazine. It hasn't happened since.
Gotta make sure you fully get the mag in there. On my XD45 it kinda locks a lil bit right beofre it actually does lock in place. Make sure you are getting it all the way in. Smash that mag right on in there! lol

What I do, it works too.

+2.. I usually give my XD40 mag a quick tap with the palm of my hand once I have pushed it in.. Just to be sure

My XD without me is useless. Without my XD, I am useless.
I've had it happen a few times. Once I had just detail stripped my XD and didn't put the catch back together correctly and another occurred after putting 600 rounds through my other XD during a training class. Mags had hit the dirt a few times and were dirty. A good cleaning and all was good. I've also seen a bent mag cause it.

You might have thought of this, maybe not though. Is it possible that every once in awhile you bump the mag release when shooting? I might be blowing smoke, but lets get the obvious reasons out of the way. Other than that, I have never had this happen to my xd 45 tac.
Thanks for the replies. I think I've got the problem solved as long as I am sure to keep my fingers away from the mag release buttons when firing and when racking the slide. I did buy an extra mag from Midway USA and it looks a little indented where the mag catch hole is. I'd better ask for an exchange to be safe.
I had this happen this weekend after installing a CT laser grip. The laser has a nice ridge that my thumb found to rest on but it placed my right thumb over the mag release. Doing some double tap drills I had the mag drop. Took a while to figure it out but it was 100% me and not the XD.
