I've seen that. If that pin bends the grip will be fowled. Is that what it is actually meant for?

Check out page 22 and page 30 in your XDm Manual and it refers to the back strap pin as the "backstrap/lanyard roll pin" so it seems that it is meant to double as a lanyard attachment point. That roll pin is very sturdy and is in there tight. I can't imagine that it would come loose or cause any damage and even if it did SA would fix the problem since they list the part as being a lanyard pin.

A lanyard has no function until you un-holster the weapon. It's designed to keep the weapon from getting too far away from your body should you drop it for whatever reason. A lanyard is no substitute for a good holster and ensuring that it is secured in said holster. 2nd level holster retention is the minimum, 3rd level will take some practice getting used to (just like 2nd level) but is the most secure for military and local tactical operations. For the military it would probably be more important to have the lanyard because you're not fighting in a controlled environment and you could be blocks away from your pistol. For SWAT/local tactical operations I would venture to say that a lanyard gets hung up on everything and you're fighting in a controlled environment (compared to the military, the building you're fighting in most likely isn't going anywhere anytime soon.) Are there shinning examples of when a SWAT operator needed a lanyard badly? Yes. Are there shinning examples of when a SWAT operator didn't need a lanyard badly? I'm sure there are, I know I've experienced it a few times in military ops.

Personally, after carrying around an M9 for a while with a lanyard, I'd never but another one on. With full gear, there's too much for it to snag on. The key is just to pay attention to where your weapon is.

I forgot to add that a lanyard is no substitute for keeping hold of your pistol lol I hated jumping out of my gun truck to go running and feeling the jerk because my lanyard was caught on something inside, or on the door.
