Breaking in a new holster.

It's been years since I purchased a new leather holster, so this old dog is trying to learn a new trick. (I've bought plenty of holsters, but most used)

I've read about putting the gun in a plastic grocery bag and sticking it in the holster overnight. I've also read about spraying the inside of the holster with silicone and putting the gun in it overnight.

Any tried and true secrets? This new holster is tight on my little XD40SC and I need to do something so I don't wear off the remaining coating on the slide.

Thanks for any comments you post.

Actually I did both things you identify on a new FIST #7. Worked good. I think I left the gun in the bag, in the holster for longer than one day though. Maybe a week, I don't recall. I took the retention screw completely out of the holster before I did it.

I've used the old "place the pistol into a plastic bag before placing into holster" thing a couple of times and it works very well. I've used thicker plastic bags, like the ones that the holster comes in. I found that leaving the pistol and bag combo in the holster overnight usually does what I want to accomplish. And it's free!

A thick plastic bag will usually do the trick. Complete break in just takes time.

I have not tried the bag, this stuff helpped loosen up the fit in a IWB and shoulder rig I got from Galco.

For a couple of Safariland duty holsters a blow dryer helped, helps to get that Level III strap to fit around the trigger guard.

I pick up my XD 45 Tactical from the gun shop tomorrow. So I'll be looking for more holsters. My wife once complained about me buying another holster, I asked her if she would be willing to wear the same pair of shoes to a wedding as she would wear when we go campping. never heard another comment about it. Funny.

That's a great comeback to your wife .I've spent a lot on holsters over the years, and yep, had similar comments directed my way.

Anyway, I sprayed the inside of my Hume 715 IWB with silicone, then I did put the XD40SC in a thick bag, and put it in the holster for a day. I then actually wore the holster and weapon for 1/2 day around the house (wife hates when I do that). Well, the gun and holster seem a perfect fit and the weapon draws very nicely.

Thanks for the tips guys.
