sight install

I just recieved my tfo's today. I see many people send their slide off for install. Is it that difficult that it takes someone with xd experience, or can a local gunsmith do it?

When I received my Truglo FO sights I took the slide to a local smith. He looked at it and didn't want to try the install. He said the factory sights "are staked in place." That's not true, although they are very difficult to move.

I sent the sights and slide to ajames who did the install. $15 and he knows what he's doing. I had the slide Duracoated at the same time. Saves the postage of sending it later on.

My local smith charged me $10, but he did have to modify his sight pusher. He said XDs are the hardest he's ever seen. A good gunsmith won't have any trouble.

A smith friend of mine helped me. The rear sight came off very easy. The front sight came off very hard. I told her that they come off hard but she was reluctant to really whack the sight. I asked for a bigger hammer and had to really whack it, but it did come off finally and with no damage to the gun (her brass punches on the other hand are another story!) The TFO's went on easier - I should say better. The front one went on much easier than the front one came off and the rear one went on a little harder, but still not too bad. The TFO's seem to be a much nicer fit overall. The XD has nice little marks to help center the sights. The TFO's shot dead nuts center once installed. Great sights. Any gunsmith can do it - just tell them that the front sight comes off really hard and don't be afraid to really whack it. Make sure he has the slide in a heavy vise with protective leather and that he uses a brass punch. The front sight is NOT staked, although looking at the underside of the slide I can see why some people think it might be.

The problem is that it's difficult the first time. I taco'd my brand new Meprolight trying to put it on and that was with a $400 sight pusher. I now know how to do it and have made some custom tools to help. I'm popping them off and on like shoes now. Unfortunately, that first time is a doozy.

But if you don't want to go throught he heartache and pains of damaging your sights and possibly worse the slide. Send it in. Send it in. Send it in.

I installed my TFO's on a Glock 26, now that I have the steps down I think I can install them on the XD, I think ill just have to whack the front stock site a little harder but thats not a problem

You can do it yourself if you are brave enough. Just remember everything comes out and goes in from the right (opposite ejection port) side. Have a little liquid bluing or copper solvent on hand to remove the brass marks when you are done. Good luck.

My smith broke my first set.

Getting them replaced and reinstalled took almost 4 months.

I'm never going there again.

I bought them from someone on ebay. The seller said they could install them for $12 buxs.
