Electronic hearing protection
Just received my XDM-45 Compact and need to join the local range and want to get some decient electronic hearing protection muffs for the wife and myself.
I googled the subject and was overwhelmed with results. So,,,,, I thought I would throw the question up to you guys.
I need some recommendations on tested and recommended favorites that do the job properly and wont break the bank or fail 2 months after the waranty expires.
Thank you for any inputs,
Bill C

Basically, you only get to pick 2. Seriously.
I have Pro-Ears Gold muffs that run $300+ a pair. They have 33db attenuation. In my book, under 30db and you WILL get hearing loss. And they have been running perfectly for 4+ years.
If you go do the "cheap" ones that are $100-ish, you will find that they are in the 21-24db range -- in my book, that's not good enough and you will lose your hearing while wearing them. (eventually) The link below is for some popular 50 buck electronic muffs. They only provide attenuation of 24 db. A 9mm is 158-161 db, that means your ears are exposed to 134 to 137db -- more than enough to cause permanent hearing loss. (I know).
The cost of quality hearing protection is less than the cost of hearing aids. Or what I have -- permanent ringing and frequency loss. And I still need hearing aids.
If you can't afford 30db+ electronic muffs --> don't buy electronic! Buy 33db passive muffs for 20 bucks.

+1 - Perfect advice. If you can not afford the highest quality electronics, don't get them. You need at least 30db. Even disposable ear plugs would be better.

I can't add anything more than hasn't already been offered.
I looked at buying the electronic muffs but discovered I can't currently afford any of the ones that would do the job properly. So rather than risk my hearing with inadequate protection I'm opting for foam plugs and passive muffs.

I wear plugs and the Howard Leight Impact Sports together. The muffs are ok by themselves when outside, but inside they don't do the job effectively.

How do these work? I really have never looked into them. you hear like normal until there's a "BANG" and it cuts the sound down before it hits your ear?

I have the Howard Leight's that John pointed out.... and I love 'em.
Brad, you can turn them on and turn the volume all the way down which will virtually kill all noise. You can also turn the volume up, which allows you to hear the person next to you while still drowning out the BANG. You can also leave them off, but it doesn't noise cancel as well.
When on and turned up, I can feel a bit guilty about hearing everyone's conversation around me with them not knowing it.

+1 for the Howard Leights. Great hearing protection as long as you are using an outdoor range. If you frequent indoor ranges then you will need to double up on your hearing protection or plop down the extra dough for some higher end muffs as the HL's don't have a super high dB reduction.

I wear the Howard joints outdoors, never indoors.
