Removing Pitting
This isn't on my XD, but I rifle I've recently acquired.
It was heavily rusted to the extent that the outside of the barrel is pitted, what's the best method the removel all the imperfections before I reblue everything?

If it i truely pitted, and you want a good finish, you will have to sand it down and reblue... "Pitting" is rusting INTO the metal. You will have to go down to bare, rustless metal.
My 2 cents

I ve done alot of refinishing on pitted items. Some items you can only go so far with before you end up having low spots or valleys. Doing the solder will work, but you have to be good with it. And depending on what finish your putting over the solder, it might be darker or lighter in that area due to the difference in materials.
Check out Caswellplating.com if your thinking of doing it yourself, they have filler materials and methods on there. But to be honest, unless its a worthwhile or memorable part, its probably not worth your investment into all the materials from them. Unless you have alot of pitted items you want to fix You should have seen this thing before I redid it. I chromed everything, copper plated a few small items, polished and repaired the pitted barrel and then hot blued it, internally media polished everything and turned around and sold it for $250 !! I got it for free. But then again I have all the stuff and do this everyday also. But again, you should have seent this thing, it looked like someone drug it behind a truck down a dirt road at 55 mph. I only got it for the trigger guard for another rifle I had. But I got a little carried away and redid the stock and next thing you know it looks like the picture below !! LOL
