Well, add me to the list....

Yeah, it finally happened: RUST. Just a little thin area of it. But it happened.

My XD's used to be "safe queens," just coming out to go to the range with me.

BUT, beginning this year, my service model has been coming with me DAILY, thanks to the increased crime and violence plaguing my city (and State).

My XD now comes along in a Blackhawk CQC auto-locking holster. I open carry whenever and wherever I can.

This increased activity has opened my XD up more to the elements than before. Between the rain, humid weather, and (apparently) my corrosive arm, my XD has started getting exposed to a bad environment.

I do wipe it down w/ a silicone cloth occasionally (semi-regularly), and give it a light coating of oil, but I guess w/out daily maintenance the rust has a chance to appear. So, I do blame myself for this problem. I should take care of it daily, but I don't.

This only affects the rear of the slide (and part of the rear sight) where my arm touches the gun, from the normal activities of daily open carry. Even where the front of the slide is getting worn from the holster, there's no rust.

I had bought my XD-9 service used about two years ago, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the fancy finish on it like the new XD's have. I'm assuming I'll just have to send it into SA to get it refinished. I have an email into them now.

Luckily I have a backup (XD-9 subbie) if my service has to go on a little trip....

I'm pretty sure it isn't. I could call them and ask, but I bought it used two years ago, so I doubt it.

SA said to send it to them and they'd see what tney could do, and if it was covered. I assume it is, so I'm not worried about that.

My problem is that I was using my service model for my CCDW training (a gun course is a requirement for CCDW License here in DE), so I couldn't send it away earlier.

I may send it in eventually. This rust problem isn't anything a little Hoppes then oiling won't fix though.

When the finish gets worn down even more, and the rust becomes more frequent, I'll send it in for a refinish job....

for now, it stays by my side, daily.
