Blueing>?<
What does this due? Is it a oil that stains metal to a blue tint, if so does it work on stainless? Does this help prevent rust and does anyone have any pics of this done on an XD? I found some at the store, I think it was Hoppes. Thanks for any info.

Blueing is actually a controlled rust. Red oxide is what you normally think of when you think rust. Red oxide occupies more space than the orginal steel, which is why it flakes off and swells.. Black oxide is another form, it however occupies the same space as the steel. It helps to seal out the oxygen from the steel to stop the formation of red oxide. This controlled rusting is created by a conbination of heat and salts. The cold blues will look ok, but will never look as good as a hot blue, and i have heard that they offer no real protection. Blueing is pointless if you dont keep it oiled also..
