Dating by Serial #
I see a lot of posts from people wondering if such-and-such XD is coated in Bruniral or Melonite. The common admonition is to call up SA and have them check.
Well, with the increasing popularity of XDs, wouldn't it be prudent to publish a serial list (i.e. serial numbers x thru y have the old coat, serial numbers z and above have the new coat). I'm assuming that they are sequential. I'm sure that the customer service representatives at SA would appreciate this. Barring this solution, maybe we could figure it out ourselves if people are willing to submit partial serials to guns purchased around 2005-2006... but some may feel that that is revealing too much. just a thought. - Pols

We've attempted this sort of thing before. I'm too lazy to look up the other threads (there are a few)....
Springfield Armory assigns the serial numbers RANDOMLY, so there is no sequential date or related finish data in the serial numbers. It is a great idea, but SA messes that concept up by not assigning sequential serial numbers by date of manufacture. It's all random, INDEPENDENT of model, options, caliber, finish, etc. Just FYI. I'm not getting down on you for the idea.
