XD Bi-tone starting to show TINY amounts of rust. Now what?
My XD45 bi-tone is starting to show tiny spots of light brown color. VERY tiny spots. They won't go away with rubbing. I'm pretty sure they are early signs of rust... If so, what should I do from now on? And if it continues, what are my options for refinishing of the SS bi-tone slide?

Call Springfield Armory Customer Service, the finish should be covered under warranty which means they refinish and no cost to you. They will pay shipping as well.

Really? I didnt know that was covered under the warranty. Luckily it has not progressed to that point, yet. I guess I should get a silicone cloth. What kind of places sell them (there's not any gun shops around my day-to-day places).
Thanks for your help! |

Doubt you could even see the dots in pics, LOL they are that small. I've have the gun for like 4 months, and carried under arm a bit. That probably didnt help! Really its not even a problem yet though.

I've been using those forever, even on the pistol I described. They do work great though, regardless! Works wonders on my P22.

Gun oil works too. If you'll hit those spots lightly with extra fine steel wool, they're probably come right off. Then keep it oiled.

The cheap silicone cloths, gun oil, whatever the lubrication, will help as a preventative measure, so long as you wipe the firearm with a clean dry cloth immediately afterwards.
You should not have to lubricate the exterior frequently; often only after cleaning the interior and proceeded by a regular wipe of a clean dry cloth. Lubrication by its nature attracts contaminants, as does the oils left by your fingerprints. These foreign substances can corrode your firearm and in rare cases, cause malfunctions. The same applies for the interior components of your firearm. If you witness corrosion regardless of maintenance practices, contact SA and seek your options with them. In the event they are unable to assist, consider having it refinished or sold. Whatever the case, good luck with it. |
