Rust in my barrel!?!?!?!?

Greetings! Today I was taking a look at my XD 45 and the barrel caught my attention. It got me kinda scared looks like rust? What do you guys think? This is a new gun I bought it a few weeks ago and it's only had about 500-600 rounds through it. I clean as soon as I get home from the range. I've been using a bore snake with hoppe's and then I finish up with some lube at the end of the snake? I am super newbie when it comes to guns and read threads about cleaning guns and what products to use and when I saw my barrel my heart sank. Am I doing something wrong? I keep the XD in a safe and it's been in there since my last clean which is a week today. Can you guys please help me??!?? Do I need to get another barrel??? Thanks!! All you guys here are great help!!

Hard to tell in the pics...need a camera with macro mode.

I'm guessing copper residue. Get some Blue Wonder Gun Gun Cleaner and use according to directions (use the brush that came with the gun). IMHO...chemicals & bore-snakes don't mix. I feel bore-snakes should be used dry and dry only. I also don't use them myself...they get so nasty, messy, filthy, gross so quick. I'm a traditional bore-brush user. Bore brushes can be quickly cleaned up after a bore cleaning session.

my guess is also copper

it seems very unlikely that rust would only form in the grooves and also since youve had it such a short time and sounds like you take good care of your gun.

is it humid where you live?

Hey thanks for the reply guys. Roger, to answer your question it is humid here (North Carolina) but not right now more during the summer time. I've heard mixed reviews about the blue wonder does anyone have another suggestion about what to do about this problem? Dosei, thanks for the advice about using macro mode I'll try to get better pics up soon. Thanks again guys!!

The mods are really starting to P me O...

The OP askes a question about his XD45...ON the XD45 forum...and the moderator tosses into "Rusty Tales" forum...

I've seen people ask about holsters for their XD45 in the XD45 forum...only to have the thread moved in the "Accessories" forum...

Exclamation

While, yes, the OP is referencing to an XD 45, his issue could be related to any of the XD line in any caliber.

The thread was moved to "Rusty Tales" because the OP's question would be better served with answers that this sub-forum offers over the XD 45 sub-forum.

The OP didn't do anything wrong. We just feel he'll get better answers in the "Rusty Tales" sub-forum... so it was moved.

Same goes for the holsters thread.

Cheers,
Bigfoot

Thats not rust.
That is copper residue, and needs to be cleaned with a good copper bore cleaner, like Hoppes Copper, or Semi Auto cleaner.
Dont waste your time with the nylon brush that came with the XDGear, get yourself a good metal bristle brush, and you will have to do a bit of scrubbing, but DO NOT try to change direction of the stroke in the barrel.
Once you have it clean, and have ran a few wet patches down the barrel and not gotten any green, or black residue out, run one oil patch down it at least twice, and then take a clean patch with the jag and you are done.
Also, insure you are not shooting copper washed rounds, but a true full jacketed round.

Be careful with metal brushes. The copper remover will break down brass brushes. So if you must use a metal brush use stainless steel.

I let my barrel soak overnight in the bottle of Hoppes Benchrest copper solvent and this morning did a quick job of brushing it out with a SS brush and then ran a few patches through it. What a difference it made. No more copper colored streaks in there. And yes, I ate off of it.

I just bought some break free bore cleaning foam so I hope that helps but let's just say I don't do anything about it will it hurt my barrel in anyway?
