Removing Rust

Hey I wanted to know what you guys use to remove rust from a rifle or pistol for that matter.I have a very old .22lr that was my grandfathers that he kept in a corner beside a dresser and its been rusted forever I've cleaned the bore out real good but I want to clean the action and barrel up so I can make a new stock and forend for it any ideas? I just dont have the money to get it professionally restored or else I would. wish I had a picture but I dont know how to post them on here or put it on this new computer

it is a J.Stevens Arms&Tools Co. 22 Long Rifle M O 3XX is a very low serial number

I just cleaned up an old H&R topper m48. I used fine bronze wool on the barrel and parts. Its softer then steel wool and didnt leave any scratches behind at all. It took off most the rust and cleaned it up real nice.
