How do you tell if you have the "pre-melonite" version? I bought mine July 06.

Do a search on here for "melonite date" OR something similar...You will find the date that SA started using melonite (it has been discussed many times).Check the date on the packaging the fired casing (that came with your XD)came in.Compare dates....ORCall SA and give them your serial number and they can tell youFYI- ALL XD45s are melonite...

You are RIGHT on the borderline of when they started switching over and producing them in melonite. Springfield can tell you if you just call them and give them your serial #. Odds are you probably have one of the old ones, but as others have suggested, you can count on it, Springfield WILL make it good unless you just abused or neglected the pistol somehow.

Good luck, and don't give up on that XD. It's a great pistol and Springfield will stand behind it for you.

If you don't want to have it "re coated" Pistol Gear sells a Blue Wonder product called armadello. It is kind of hard to apply but I CC my .45 Tac in SW AZ and No rust. It works.

It looks like OS is out of the kits right now but I like the BW stuff.

my 2 cents

Are you carrying in leather or plastic? If you're using leather, you should take the pistol out everynight and wipe it down, as the leather holds moisture. I have 2 identical holsters that I alternate every day. If it seems that the holster is moist, I roll up a piece of newspaper and try to wick out the moisture. Look how sweaty leather boots get, all a holster is, is a boot for you pistol! I've been carrying this way for the past 7 years in Texas summers, and have not had a rust issue yet. Knock wood.
