I cleaned my XD by repeatedly brushing back and forth. The main thing is to be careful about the muzzle (Damages are sometimes caused by the shaft of the brush or rod brushing up against it repeatedly) damages to the crown can affect accuracy.

I'd recommend Iosso brand brushes. The nylon is very stiff. Unfortunately I don't have one for my .45.

Frequent scrubbing to get them "squeaky clean" does a lot of abrasion. |

i use hoppe's on mine and i could definatley eat off the inside of my barrel (if i could stuff food into a 9mm hole) haha
just clean your gun better....spend a little more time and use alot more detail. a Bore snake with a few drops of oil after the bush's does a good job on the barrel, after youve done the nylon brush and solvent job.

If this is the case, get some Break-Free barrel foam. It lifts that copper right off. Even works on that pesky copper stain that forms around the striker.

When I have heard people state that it is bad to use a back and forth motion, they are talking more about situations where the barrel is not being removed from the action. Thus, you would be pulling the dirt, grit, metal fouling into the action. When you field strip your XD, this would not be a problem. Also, it is usually recommended that you pass or push the brush all the way through the bore each way and not switch directions in the middle. This can damage the barrel or cause the brush to get stuck.
