The Old Rust Issue Again.....
It's been a long time since I last posted here. It's been since I was doing some research of which auto pistol I wanted to buy. I wound up buying a couple of S & W, M & P's but not because they were any better than the XD's. That's just the way it worked out and I have no regrets.
All that said, I keep hearing on other forums about rust problems with the XD's and I think that issue has been addressed and corrected by S.A. I would like to set someone straight about this, so called, XD problem. Could someone please direct me to the thread(s) addressing this issue?

It would probably be easier just to use the "search" function with key words like melonite and rust for specific threads, but I can provide a summary.
Yes...the early models of the XD did have finish and corrosion problems due to the use of a conversion coating that wasn't up to the job. It didn't affect every pistol, but enough to make it a recognized design problem. The XD45 was the first model to make use of the same finish process as Glock (Tennifer, but a different name), effectively fixing the problem. The entire XD line was then upgraded to the new finish around April of '06, so if you purchase an XD manufactured after that date, you've got the new finish. However, even if you by some chance get one of the older models, if it does rust, just send it back to SA and they'll refinish it for you. The new finish is much better than the old one, as accounts of corrosion issues in newer models have effectively disappeared.

I have one of the early XDs, and yes it did start to rust soon after I got it. I got it out one day to find it looked as if it was covered in very fine iron power. It cleaned off without a problem, but it did kind of freek me out. I started using the Blue Wonder and have not had one problem since. The stuff works great! And you don't have to re-apply that often. I only do it about every 5th time I clean my gun. pete ps- I hope the jar-headed grammer police find this post cut the muster. Or is it mustard?
