XD Rust Issues - any worse than any other guns?

Are the XD rust issues any more common than with any other firearms?

Maybe it's just because of the fact that "Rust" has it's own sub-forum on here, but, it's got me a little worried!

Thanks!

No it is not worse than any other similar type. Just to give you an example, Smith and Wesson came out with a similar new model, the M&P, within the last year or so. They, just like the XD in its earlier models, have had some problems with rust, even though theirs is a totally stainless slide that has been Melonite-treated.

If you read up on the reports and background on this forum, you'll find out that most of the rust problems were with earlier XD's (pre-2006 models) that were treated with a process called "Bruniral". This apparently was not very effective, and now the XD is treated with a process called "Melonite", which is similar to that used by Glock. A few people still have had rust issues even with Melonite since 2006, but the percentage is much lower, and for the large majority of people should never be a problem. The number of people who have problems with XD's now does not appear to be any higher than people have with any other brand.

If you're really concerned about it, the best way to go might be to get one of the 2-tone XD's that have a stainless slide. Even stainless ones can rust, but again, your odds are much better. But overall, I'd say you have nothing more to fear from an XD rusting than you do with any other major brand. You always have a certain low percentage that are going to have an issue with ANY brand you buy, but the important thing is to buy from a maker who stands behind their products, and Springfield definitely does. They have among the very best customer service of all the companies out there.

YES!

Without a doubt, the XD has had a lot more rust issues than other guns. Springfield has suppossedly solved the problem with their new coating, but the older models rust with much greater frequency than other like models. I have yet to hear about a Glock rusting unless it was submerged in water. Of all the models of guns I own, only the XD has had any significant rust issues. This includes: Sig, HK, Glock, S&W, Beretta, Colt, Ruger, CZ, Paraordnance, Taurus, Firestorm, Remington, Winchester, Bushmaster & Keltec. All my guns have been sujected to the same environment and same conditions (in sunny SoCal) and only the XD has been an issue. XD's are "OK" guns, but if you want a similar platform with much higher quality, go with Glock. Just my opinion.
