RUST!!! What steps to take?
Pulled my XD sub from my holster and found some surface rust along the body side of the slide. I have a faded Melonite finish and am afraid that if I try to polish or sand it, it will affect the rest of the finish.
What are my options? I am cheap and would prefer to fix it myself as opposed to paying someguy $100 an hour. Refinish it? Blue it? Duracoat? Polish? Also, there is rust on the inside of my holster now, can i still use it? Thanks in advance, HR.

I'd sandblast it and then dip/spray it with K-Phos by KG GunKote. Or blast it then Parkerize it, then K-phos. I have a huge bottle of it, I could send you an ounce if you paid shipping. K-Phos inhibits rust.
Then I'd coat it in some form of coating. Moly Resin is my favorite of the usual coat jobs, very durable bake on finish. Or you don't even have to coat it with a color, just put a clear coat on it if you like.

Now, if you say, home-parkerize it, will that void your warranty in any way?

Call SA customer service. If it is rusting they will have you send it in for refinishing under warranty.

If it is light surface rust then wiping it down with a good oil will clean that rust off. Then keep is coated in a very light coating of something protective and you should not have a problem. My personal favorite is RIG grease. A very light coating and it protects very nicely. I have the old coating on my XD-40's and they have gotten surface rust on me several times. Usually from going in my shooting bad dirty after a match and me not getting to clean them for several days. The surfaces rust always cleans off and they still look decent.

First of all I want to say hi to everyone, I am knew here, but just like all of you guys, I love XDs. Rust seams to be a problem among some of us, I bought a used XD9 SB and of course it did not showed any rust at time I bought it. I was carrying it conceal with a comp-tac CTAC IWB holster and some how the humidity was getting to it. After I carry the pistol for about 8 hrs, I got home and it was showing some rust spots. After reading some threads at XDTALK, I found out that the Some XD models 2005 and earlier showed some rust problems, and believe me, I keep my guns clean and well lubricated. My options was to get the rust remove and get a new coat on the gun, either duracoat or one of the other coats available online. But after doing some math, I determeine that I was going to spent at least $100 to have the problem temporarily fix. I say temporarily, because rust can not be stop, it can be slow down, but not stop. Believe me I know, I am a corrosion protection tech, or cathodic protection for those familiar with that term. So what I desided to do was to pay about $160 dollars out of pocket, and trade the XD9 SB for a brand new XD-357sig. Now I am a happy camper, and I am not stress out about my investment rusting away for now...

rust problem
hi to all,
I'm from the philippines and it seems there is a problem with the rust proffing of the hs/xd. I had a hs2000 9mm 1st generation pistol and when I got the gun , it had rust in some places including the outside of the barrel. I once read that the gun has a tennifer like coating called bruniral or something. If most of the guns there at the states are like this, no wonder glock rules. I'm not saying glock is a better gun, I'm actually gonna buy a new hs2000 40 cal. tactical. I had my experience with the glock 17 and 21 pistol. They too rust but not that offen, you have to abuse the pistol for it to apprear but as long as hs/xd keeps having this prblem, I think springfield must address this issue at once. Also isn't melonite the finished that s&w were using on there sigma line of pistol? Anyway if you have any comment you can e-mail me at mraldnyt@yahoo.com Takecare and be safe always |

I had the same problem with mine. Put some Blue Wonder on it, let it sit for a few minutes and wipe the rust right off. It won't hurt any of the remaining finish. Then just make sure that you put some oil on it when you clean it and wipe it down and you should be good to go.

Blue Wonder has had a great effect on my Gen 1...It sits out on my night stand, and has not exibited any signs of rust for well over a year.
