Yes, I did do a similar post. I keep getting conflicting answers so I was hoping if I posted in the rust area I would be able to find out more. Again, a few people have said one thing that is different from what others have said. I just want to get whichever one that is less likely to rust.

But you keep overlooking the main point!

Take care of it, and neither one will!!!

I understand that but after reading through "Rust Tales" I see that many people have complained of their guns rusting even after taking very good care. I know that prior to 06 the slides had a different finish so that is not what I am asking. The bi tone is $50 more than the melonite. Is this because it is less likely to rust, show wear etc? Or is this based solely on looks? Which one, considering that both would be very well taken care of, would be a better choice?

I am gonna say the extra 50 bucks is because the slide is a different material (actual stainless steel, rather than just steel on the melonite version).

go with your gut feeling about which one you want. or you could buy both and do an experiment and find out which one rusts first.

Both are stainless steel, melonite goes over the stainless. In fact, I think melonite is actually a treatment that can be applied to both models.

So does that mean that the melonite would make more sense to buy? If they are both stainless steel but the melonite provides even further protection, why does the bi tone cost more?

Per the website, they are not. The bi-tone is the only one listed as stainless.

The melonite on the 'non' Bi-Tone guns is a treatment done to the metal, not a finish.

I am still confused. Do you think it would be best to call Springfield and ask this question? I don't care to pay the extra $50 for the bi tone, I actually like the look better I think. But if they are both stainless steel, but one has a melonite treatment and the other doesn't, it seems like it would make more sense to go with the melonite version.
