Rust in new XD 9mm
I just purchased a new XD 9mm tactical firearm earlier this month and have only put 450 rounds through it, but have been having some FTF issues. The cartridge would be in the chamber, but there would be no dent at all in the primer or on the cartridge. I believe this may be that when I was slingshotting the slide, I may have not been releasing quick enough and getting the slide to full battery. For grins, however, I decided to take apart the firing pin assembly, etc found on http://www.xd-hs2000.com/disassembly/disassembly.html ( which was great, by the way!) to check if anything was wrong.
As it turns out, when I pulled out the firing pin, and the firing pin safety, they had a rusty reside all over them! This seems crazy, since the handgun was brand new (the used brass in the case dated april 07). Has anyone ever seen this before? I'm sure glad I decided to take it apart because at least I could clean it and oil it up before more use. |

Are you sure it wasnt just lube? When I pulled the firing pin and firing pin block, I found a reddish grease that looked like rust residue until I examined further.. It turned out to be factory lube..
Both my xd9 and xd40 were like this when I got them... |

It's possible. However, it looked like there were even some solid particles in it. The rest of the gun was lubed by the manufacturer with a different oil - would this be the normal way to do it, or should I use something special for the firing pin, etc?

I wish I could help here, but I am relatively new to guns myself..
I use gun butter on all the moving parts and clp on the rest for rust protection.. |

Just clean it very good and oil it pretty heavy for the first 500 or more rounds Put a couple drops of oil on the pin itself from the back of the weapon & let it run down inside . This helped me with mine! It might sound crazy but I use a light thin oil from LUCAS, however it works great!

I wish I had taken pics while I was cleaning it. I wasn't able to get out the extractor because I didn't have the "hook" tool to remove. When I get one I will see if it has rust colored liquid, and if it does I will post pictures.
I emailed SA about this, and they responded really quickly saying that they didn't know what the red colored liquid would be, but that I should clean the gun as best I could. If there were any further problems, that I can call them and they will stand behind their lifetime warranty. I also asked them what kind of cleaner and lube that they recommend on the XDs. They said anything at the gun store would really do. They use LPS to clean the XDs, and DSX oil. Has anyone heard of or ever used these? Sean |
