At the Glock armorers school you are taught not to oil the firing pin or channel, because oil attrachs dirt which makes you gun not go boom if you get enough gunk up in there. I use the same rule for all my autos and have never had a problem. Also, oil will freeze up if it gets cold enough. That, and the dirt, is more than likely what caused your light primer hits.

I agree the grim and oil was part of the problem but the real problem was the water from the Hoppes Elite and the amount of rust it caused. The water froze for sure in there it was only 25F that day so I doubt the oil I use froze at that temperature but the water certainly would and the rust wasn't helping the situation any either.

I have pretty much fixed the problem. Cleaned the rust out real good. I quit using Hoppes Elite completely and the striker channel gets the smallest amount of the lightest oil I have just enough to inhibit rust. I also put a new striker spring in for good measure. It had a bit over 9000rds on the original spring plus a lot of dry firing so I figure it was time.

Lately whenever I shoot, even one round, I completely strip everything in the slide and clean it.. I use a toothbrush and good ole soapy hot water. When it is all completely clean, I dry it off very good then use an airhose to blow ALL of the water and moisture out of the firing pin and locking block.. Then I use a small paint brush and paint on a coat of oil, let it sit a few minutes and wipe the majority off, and lube with gun butter, and good to go....

Then again, I enjoy cleaning my guns, do it when they are not dirty sometimes..

I just finished posting a thread today on this same exact matter - except in this case, my XD was brand new! I had the same rust. I think it is the lube that the manufacturer puts in the gun when assembling.

See thread: Rust in new XD 9mm
