The ONLY company I've seen that says that Melonite can't be applied after the fact, is Springfield. Which is obviously not true. It CAN be done. It's not cheap, but it can be done. Eventually I plan on having my XD40 taken care of with this. And no, Melonite does not need a covering of oil to prevent rust. It's rust-inhibitive on it's own. Does oil hurt? No.
Phosphate coatings, now those are slightly porous and do indeed benefit greatly from having the pores filled with oil. Melonite, not so much.
I don't think that Springfield say that it can't be done, they say that they won't apply Melonite to a non-melonite pistol.

The reason for that is pretty simple. Springfield Armory doesn't do the melonite finish on their XD's. It's done at the factory in Croatia. Which means if they were to offer to refinish an old XD in the new melonite finish they would have to ship your gun back to Croatia, through their customs, refinish the gun, then re-import it back into the US. That's a logistical nightmare and it would probably take 6 months just for the paperwork.

Their story as I've seen it, is amongst other things that it "can't be done in the US." Which is plainly false.

Can't be done "by them" in the US - likely due to logistics as vafish mentioned. I wouldn't call it completely false on their part, just misleading.

We'll be sending the XD to Cold Creek Armory on Saturday...I'll let you all know how it looks when we get it back. Pretty excited...they even had TFOs for me.

The TFOs are a no-go, because of the melt job I did before I sent it. I went with the Entreprise ghost ring sights instead, and they should be working on it now. I can't wait to see the photos from my wife when it gets back.
