Melonite finished XD?

So from everything I have read, the rust problem is the only thing that scares me about the XD. Im getting a XD.40 this week and is it safe to say that mine WILL have the Melonite finish, or are there still older models selling? I want to make sure I get a newer Melonite one.

Thanks,
Victor

Welcome to the forum, victor! If your XD was manufactured in May 2006 or more recently it will be the newer Melonite finish.

victor, just to be safe get the serial number off of the gun you want to buy and call springfield...their number is on the SA website and dial customer service when you hear the prompt. I just got a sub compact 9mm and they just put the number into a computer and viola! It took me a minute of my time tops and the guy on the other end of the line was really nice. Gotta love melonite!

No, its not safe to say it will have the new finish. I bought one last week brand new that was from late 05. However, if it makes you feel better.. Springfield said not to worry. If it rusts, they will replace it with the new finish. It was cheper than the new ones too, because it did not have all that other stuff with it that was useless to me. I am not worried about it, but wife does not like it anyway, just going to keep it and add to the collection, its fun to shoot...

With a lifetime warranty you should not have anything to worry about either way.

From all that I have read here, SA stands behind their products.

honestly, there is no "Rust problem"... Yeah, if you rub sweat and dirt on it for a while, then set it on a shelf for a week without cleaning it or anything you may get a slight film of rust on it...

BUT... if you actually clean, and occasionally wipe it down with a silicone rag, or some oil, It won't rust... I've forgot to clean mine a few times, and got a little film of the dreaded rust on it, you just wipe it down and keep it oiled, and it doesn't really matter...

Interesting how many different figures you'll get on this... I got curious and called Springfield 2 days ago about this same question - they said that they started shipping 9mm and .40 w/ Melonite in Feb 2006. I'm suspecting though that if someone else were to call them and ask, your milage may vary!

So, I think it's safe to figure that there may have been some done in Melonite in January that didn't ship till Feb.

I'll have to call Springfield on mine now to find out the 'born on date'...

but..on the lifetime warrenty on the finish..

do they honor that if i traded for the gun and NOT the original owner?

it's nice that they'll stand behind it like that
