I belive that even though the XD9 tac was purchased recently, it does NOt have the Melonite treatment. The other XD (same CLp bottle) and other guns do not show any rust...

In April I will start shooting my open...LOL, but production is home for me.

BTW: Does anyone what SA is doing for customers who are experiencing this issue?

I believe they're offering Armory Coat finish to those that have experienced rust issues. Contact Deb and see what she says.

Oxidation causes rust, not CLP.

CLP does not cause rust nor does any other popular gun product. But CLP is a solvent, which means it removes oil and dirt very well. But that leaves the steel exposed to the humid Florida air.

A better way to go might be to use CLP (or Hoppes or any other) as a cleaner/degreaser, then dry the gun off and apply a thin coat of a thicker oil. I don't leave oil on the outside of my slide because it's a carry gun and I don't like it to be all oily. I use a silicone cloth on the outside. But I live in dry-as-hell Colorado, so you may still need oil on the outside too.

Krackels has it spot on! If you have an XD pre-melonite treatment then the use of Eezox or Corrosion-X is a good idea.

Have a look at this post: XD-9 Barrel Smile (p=370443&postcount=15) In this thread: XD-9 Barrel Smile - Need Some Advice (little worried). at the very bottom of the post I included a link to a good article on how to keep your firearms rust free.

From the Armalite Website:

"Some time ago, the military switched to CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, and Preservative) as a do-all small arms maintenance product. That’s nice for logisticians, who now need only provide a single product. CLP is commercially sold under the brand name Break Free. Unfortunately, CLP is a compromise product, and does nothing especially well. Some of the most experienced of the government’s small arms engineers have concluded that the old combination of RBC (Rifle Bore Cleaner) and LSA (Lubricant, Semifluid, Automatic Weapons) is the best combination of materials for ArmaLite® family arms. We agree with the RBC/LSA combination as a starting point, with other later products judiciously used if available."

I use CLP because it works well enough alone on my pistols in the low humidity conditions of the southwest. If I was in a higher humidity area I would go to a heavier synthetic oil solution. When I was in the army we only used CLP in the desert. RBC & LSA was the norm in all other areas.

Thanks. Will call this monday. I've been using CLP for decades, never had a problem and I have a multitude of weapons. I strongly believe the issue is not CLP, but the finish on the gun, as the other guns (Xd's included) do not and have not shown any sign of rust. But will keep an eye out an see what if it's the CLp...

Thanks all...

i use CLP to clean mine, then coat it ever so lightly with hoppes gun oil.
i know i just got my gun a month now, but i treated a shotgun i had when i was a teen for about 10 years in much the same manner. a light coat of hoppes oil was enough to keep rust off my winchester shotty for 10 years in houston.

cleaning with CLP is fine, but i didnt like the lubricating effect of it, so i covered the barrel and inside of slide with hoppes oil, and some on the outside of the slide with hoppes oil, then wiped the slide almost completely free of the oil.. only a very light film remains.

cheers

I clean and then use silicone wipe that come in a plastic container and have never had a problem. My earlier XDs did have a problem with rust.

i don't recall which magazine it was, but one of the gun mags i bought not long ago had a test in it of different solvents/oils, and clp did the best job of protecting against rust. But, I don't know how long clp can sit on the gun without evaporating.. if it does evaporate enough. Possibly it just dried out. but that'd still point toward the finish being at fault.
